Hi, I currently own a 2005 Freelander TD4 and have a noisy heater when the vents are set to windscreen demist. All other positions i.e underfoot well etc all seems quiet.I know that apparently the aircon comes on as well as the heater if temp is above 5degrees so as to asisst the demist on the windscreen so I assume the surging whirring sort of noise is presumably from the aircon unit in the the lower passenger side of the vehicle. The aircon doesn't seem to be very affective neither so I guess it needs a re-fill. Will this also cause the noise that I am hearing or is their another issue? thanks

You may just be a little confused here.

The air-con comes on automatically if you select the vents to windscreen (demist) and switch on the fan - temperature is not a factor. No light will on to confirm that the AC is operating.

On cold start-up the fbh should/might come on if the temperature is below about 5degrees to assist a faster warm up. Plenty noise from under the front near-side bumper where a 1" diameter exhaust is located. You may also hear the dedicated fbh pump ticking away at the rear.

Of course if your AC is poor it will benefit from a check/fluid top up - but lack of fluid should not make any extra noise.

Singvogel.

Ours is a little noisy too if set to demist the screen, just the sound of the air rushing through the vents, slight whistle on 2, and gets a little louder as fan speed is increased...

Many thanks, temp is currently well above 5 deg's so fuel burning heater not coming on.Definately the air con that is making all the noise, almost sounds like a heavy breathing sort of sound, surging wheezy sort of noise coming from the from down by passengers footwell where the aircon compressor is,weird.

maybe check the condition of the pollen-filter ..
just a thought ..
no idea if a clogged one would give that noise symptom on the de-frost setting

i find that using the interior re-circulation button makes the system noisy in mine
( only tried it once out of curiosity .. prefer not to use it )

am using a 'Puravent Upgrade Pollen Filter'
