About to replace the glass seals on my TD5 sunroof.

Any top tips, 'cos at the moment I'm just going to make it up as I go along...

(I know there's loads of threads on leaking sunroofs, but I couldnt find anything about this specifically and I've already done the mastick on the frame surround).

Theres a good chance that the water will be getting in between the frame and the roof. Gorming the frame with silicone is not the best repair as it looks awfull and doesnt last very long.

The sealant bead that is used at the factory just doesnt stick very well to the roof skin, allowing water past.

Here you can see the rear of the roof skin where the seal has worked,

and here you can see the front of the roof skin where it hasnt.

The frames need taking out, the old sealant cleaning off,

and re-sealing.

Do this and that will be the end of the leaks.

I did use some new mastik (I think it was gutter sealant) a couple of years ago which stopped most of the interior rain. I think I'll re-do the frames to roof again as part of this job. Do you also recommend Sikaflex? Seems to be the one most mentioned around the forum.

Well I replaced the seal, but its clear that the water is getting in under the frame (again).
I guess its a headlining/mastik job again. :(
Any recomendations as to which version of the Sikaflex to use?

I used a sealant that I use for work to bond glass and plastics.

When I did my Clio,s roof, ( belive it or not, it,s not just the Discovery that suffers from leaky sunroofs ), I used the Sikaflex you can buy from Screwfix. Failing that, you could just go to your nearest friendly windscreen place and ask if you could but a tube of windscreen adhesive from them.

Just done mine with clear sealant from a Aqarium, it does not harden and if it seals a fish tank it seals a sunroof :D not saying its the best thing but it worked for me

I would be cautious about using Sikaflex as this goo is a permanent adhesive so if your sunroof required removing for repair at any time in the future, it will be a right barsteward to release the frame from the roof. It was devised for the boat building industry and hence the effectiveness of its adhesion. Personally I would recommend a decent silicone sealant.

Oh - I just ordered the Sikaflex too :(
Guess I'll have to get some silicon instead.... Thanks for the tip though.

I wanted something pretty tough as the frame is a little twisted - I was going to knock up a wooden frame to hold it down while it dried...
