Series 3 Sump gasket or RTV?

Hi all
I’ve taken the sump off my 1982 Series 3 which has a 2.5 NA diesel (no engine number available) but has red painted sump / block.

The Haynes says to use gasket or RTV but not sure which on mine, there was a gasket on it but it was leaking (could have been many years since it was replaced anyway) Anyone know which this engine should have?

Gasket with a very, very thin bead of sealant. Nothing worse than pulling ropes of sealant out of an oil pump strainer.

Series part will do.l

Thanks so suggestion is a double sealant. Sealant to reinforce the gasket. Any great sealant brands / suggestions for it?

There are gaskets and gaskets.

Some you get are like toilet paper and some quite thick. It’s a bit of a lottery which one turns up. One of the first jobs I did many moons ago and couldn’t believe just how uneaven the sump flange is. Full of spot welds etc.
even with the thick ones I’d use a smear of silicone each side.

I like Blue Hylomar.
Thinned with a touch of white spirit and painted on with a small brush.

Thanks, luckily the sump pan is in good condition and seems very even around the connecting edge, I ordered a 'genuine Land Rover' gasket which isnt very thin but isnt thick, paper type though sadly didnt come in any branded bag was just loose in a box with a load of other things so hopefully I have what I asked for! I've also bought some gasket sealant which i'll use to just give some added joining. If I can stop the sump leaks then thats one less that it has!

If the sump isn't entirely flat then adjust with a Landrover service tool such that the flange between the holes touches the block first. That way the bolts will tighten the gasket throughout.
