Gidday, driving down the A2 yesterday taking son to rugby game, came off A2 and went to change down but couldn't get it into any gear, came to a stop and tried again and at last found one.....**** reverse, now its stuck there, AA couldn't fix it on road so got Landy trucked home, now on driveway still in reverse, can anyone help? and before you say strip it down or whatever, my mechanical ability goes as far to change an alternator belt and thats it. so what i need is;
A: does anyone know a good mobile mechanic
B: if not can i reverse all the way to a garage

Cheers,thanks in advance.

did you try putting transfer box into neutral, then trying to get it out of gear.

But why would that have stopped him getting into gear in the first place??? The syncromech would have alowed it to get into gear even if he had to lift the clutch up and down a few times to align the cogs????

As for reversing to the garage - it sounds like a selector issue as opposed to a actual drive issue so - depending on the damage and what is wrong - then it may be safe (from a gearbox point of view) to reverse there - Just make sure it is safe from a road point of view (i.e. if your only going a few feet down the road then i guess it would be fine, however if your going down a motorway (or any other road for that mater) then i would guess it would not be the safest thing to do - your local garage should be able to tow you there quite cheeply if there going to do the work for you!

was just a suggestion to get him going forward. A series 2 I had about 30 years ago used to do similar, it was only used in the bush so not a problem, it would some times get locked in first and other time reverse, by putting transfer into neutral it came out every time.

you sure ur clutch is working properly?? cant see it being a gearbox fault as it just suddenly went. but i could be wrong about that. if you start it in gear does the vehicle stop if you depress the clutch?

Thanks for the info so far, yes i can get the transfer box into neutral, but this doesn't help, the AA man said it could be the selector box. the engine and gear box are out of a Discovery 1, its a 2.5L d, he checked the clutch and topped it up and bled it and i can start it in reverse and drive it backwards ok and it stops when i depress the clutch.

thanks again gents
