having never had a 4x4 before i didnt really think of trying the low range box.... tried today and all that happens is i get "select neutral" on the dash and the gear symbol flashes, low range orange lights at the gear shifter flashes and beeps at me....however long i try...? what should i look/ test for....? not tried driving it...just leave it in neutral to see if it will change over....?

oh bugger.....!!

Nick

Are you leaving it in neutral long enough for the transfer box to switch over? It takes a few seconds on my P38, then it stops beeping and you can select the low gears.

It's a motor on the box that switches the range over. If it hasn't been used for a while . . . .

Download RAVE, the workshop manual - have a hunt and you'll find it for free, and have yourself a read. It's not the most difficult repair.

I agree, the motor has stuck or the connections are corroded or the neutral switch is not working, can you start the car in neutral as opposed to park? I assume it's auto. You have RAVE on the EAS CD I sent you:)

I am currently in the process of having new brushes made for my transfer box motor. Its really simple to strip down and have a look. The brushes were so worn that they were no longer in proper contact with the commutator. For some reason no springs were provided to press them onto the commutator which I suspect is to stop excessive wear as they are a pretty soft compound. Having secured them to the commutator I hooked up the blasted thing to a multitool adapter (12v) and sure enough the thing started spinning away. I have sent off one of the brushes to Solent tools (Carbon Brushes, Drive belts, Lawn Mower Blades) who are going to quote me for a replacement set. If you don't want the hassle, then the cheapest replacement I have found is on island4x4. Its about £180 as supposed to over £225 for an OEM. Good luck!

well it was doing this....

and now..... after selecting low range and high range a few times...well about twenty... it now works fine... beeps and flashes three times and then you can hear the change over....and blimy...if feels like it could pull a train...!!! never drove anything that had low range before especially not a 4.6......!!!! i presume that the low range had not been used for some time so was just stuck until it was given a little nudge back and forth for a bit.....

happy days....!

The trick now is, now and then, select low range. I do it whenever I'm parked up waiting for her indoors.
