Hi, got a bit of a prob with my swb s111, the front tyre,s are wearing the outside edge away. I thought it was tracking, then i found i had a t/r/end with play in it so i replaced them both. I set my tracking by eye, ready to take it to my local tyre spot, but when i looked at my landy head on, i noticed i had a bit of positive camber, the wheels seem to be splaying out at the top. Iv,e checked for play and cant find any, everything seems tight and slop free, anyone got any ideas ?
cheers
Dave:confused:

just set them both straight ahead, like i said, i was just getting it near so i could drive it to be done properly, thing is if there,s something else wrong i,de best get it all sorted before i get it set properly

when tyres are worn they often do unevenly ,cornering will give outer edge a harder time they can look like that as swivel pin alignment needs to go through center of tyre ,get themk tracked and go fron there,if no play in swivel pins/bushes,wheel brgs

Has the front axle been rebuilt ?
Are the swivel housings new all the caster and camber angles are in there right
Maybe somebody fitted them in the wrong position or on the wrong side

Toe in is a couple of mm difference measured at the wheel rim. Everything else is fixed by the front swivel geometry. Check for play in the steering, wheel bearings and swivel.

i'm in exactly the same boat as you mate, went through the last front set of tyres light noone's business, just put 2 new on and they clearly lean out at the top, i also changed drag link and steering rod, track rod ends, wheels bearings, raiko bushes, king pins, i just dont know what to do, i do have a wollowing issue also, thought this was the initial problem but tightened up the steering box and it doesn't wollow have as much,
i had a thought the other day, when doing the king pin, i put enough shims in to set it to the poundage but could taking some out pull the wheels in?
i'm no mechanic but am determined to do all work myself, any help welcomed, start with tracking then?

if the swivel housings are the same both sides then i would be looking at the joint between the axle and swivel, is it a clean tight joint ?
rust in here will cause the swivel to sit at a funny angle
take them off and clean with a wire brush on an angle grinder till everything is shiny and refit

Its fairly normal for a series to have a slight lean outwards at the top of the tyres. but they should be pretty much parallel (if you imagine looking down from above them).
OUter edge wear could point to it being overloaded on one side. Its not that odd for the passenger side front outer edge to wear as we go round all those roundabouts...all our vehicles at work are like that.

i agree that the passenger side wore out faster, and understand that cornering has to be taken into account but this is beyond that, i'm running 31 10.50 15's and they are bigger than standard but this is more than a little wear, my last tyres were completely bald on the outside yet had a good 8mm of tread on the inner, heart breaking stuff!
when you look from the front of the landy and compare front alignment to the rear, its scary!

the joints all look fine, been under her this morning, if i strip them done, should i buy some gaskets before doing so, if so do you know what ones i'd need?
thanks

you need to make sure line of top and bottom pin goes thru center of tyre thatrs why you get different offsets,if it doesnt tyre wear will increase, you can use rtv silicone instead of gaskets

232413 is the part number for the gasket although if the swivel flange had come loose or wasn't on square I'd expect a bit of oil leakage from the joint....

if you could draw a line through top and bottom swivel pin it should hit the ground at the center of tyre ,the offset of wheel can move tyre off center line ,which on your steered wheels can effect cornering and tyre wear

ok, i understand now, thanks, will check tomorrow, but if it is out of centre, what would have caused this? and how do i go about linning them back up? sorry but i am a bit of a novice, thanks for the help thus far

if std wheels they will be right ,the leaning out at top helps with turning especially off road ,my lightwiegth does the same with front tyres but does take a few years to do it

i see, because my tyres on my wheels are 31 10.50 15, compared to the standard 7.50 16, they sit about an inch lower, but could that be causing the lean out that bad?
i suppose the thing to do (as well as checking the centre line), is to stick my original wheels back on to see how things look?
