Strange tapping

I have got a strange tapping noise coming from the engine. What could this be?

Is it a little mouse with clogs on?

you could start by looking at the thingamyjig but if all else fails the wotsit could cause your problem

Its a landrover, is the engine running? If so then its normal

could be the hamsters are on strike















or if you want a proper anwser it would be usefull to know which engine? or even try the specific section for your type of engine

where within the engine bay does the tapping appear to be coming from?

Is it loud or quiet? metal on metal or plastic sounding? more of a tick or more of a clack?

Listen to it with the bonnet up and take the oil filler cap off. If its obviously coming from just under there it could well be the tappets and just need adjustment. Ive also had a 300 with more of a knock, and that turned out to be one of the pistons just about burned out.

It sound like the good old diesel knock but a lot louder

tappets, rocker spacer springs or melted cylinder.

The burned out piston sounded like this, are you getting smoke? Are you sure its not a tap instead of a knock? Try opening filler cap and see if its ticking from inside there, i hope it is cos thats a lot easier to fix.
