Strange sound

possibily another fault on my 2000 Discovery 2 TD5

I get a sort of buzzing sound from the front nearside wheel area, Not all the time, sometimes it happens when im turning right, sometimes when i hit a bump. Its a hard sound to descibe sort of like a motor turning ??? I also get a similar noise when im offroad in the mud im thinking its maybe something to do with ABS or traction control but not sure.

No warning lights and nanocom does not report any errors.

Anyone have any thoughts ?? could it be a faulty ABS sensor causing the traction control/abs to kick in when its not needed???

both disco 2s that my dad has had have made a sort of (hard to describe) gurgling noise coming from either front wheel whenn put under decent acceleration or rough surface, the rumbly sprt of noise is what he assures me is the traction control. hope this helps, also sounds a bit like a motor grinding??!!! (but isn't)

If the TC is doing it, when u hear the noise the TC light on the dash must illumunate while it's working(check it when u turn ignition if the lamp works).......if your tyres are not in the best shape could happen(it's happening to me too when i go with the mud terrains on wet driveways).......abs sensor faults are recognised by tester............if no faults logged i'd say dont bother with it if it's just a now and then kind of behaviour.......and make certain that the tyres are not overinflated.

Hi Brian, do you sls air suspension on the back? If you do, the air compressor is underneath the front passneger seat and can make these noises.
Do you have ACE? The valve block for this is underneath the drivers seat and can make the noises you describe.

Looking at your last paragraph, it sounds like you are describing the operation of Traction Control.

I think Traction Control too, although mine went through a period of making the noise (especially when accelerating over rough ground or even over a rised man hole) but not eluminating the TC light, i think it was a lose connection as the light seems to come on now every time i hear the noise.

Fingers crossed it is the TC !!

No warning on Nanocom so looks like the abs sensors should be ok.

I've never noticed the traction control light coming on when it does happen but will look next time it occurs. The lights are all working OK on the dash so i think i would have seen it flash by now. When i'm in the proper mud and the traction control kicks in i do see the light come on just not under normal use.

I don't have the SLS as its been converted to springs. Ace pump etc is all ok and its defo coming from the front wheel hub area.

Im sure its the TC and is its intermittent ill just leave it for now and see it it fails properly a bit later on.

From what others have said its "normal" for this to happen it just seemed funny it only happens on the front nearside wheel.

Mine makes the same sort of noise under the same conditions that you described, I think it's just the ACE or TC doing its job. It only does it when going over a bump (like a kerb or pothole for example) whilst turning at the same time.

i'd say it's just because the nearside is closer to u and u hear it better ........try to drive it from the offside and u'll think it's the offside then.........dont bother with it if as u said no faults logged.
