I've got a 96 4.6 auto & I've noticed something strange with the gearbox, well it might not be strange, I've never had a range rover before. When going up through the gears and light throttle everything is normal but if I give it a little more, first to second is fine & second the third is fine but then it feels like the torque converter locks up for a second then un locks then goes into forth & locks up again. It feels a bit rough when it does it but as I said its fine if driven normally. It is ok if driven quite aggressively too.
Anyone got any ideas? I thought it might be a weak lock up valve in the valve body?

Nothing strange other than it shouldn't be rough when it changes up or locks up. Assume you have you checked the ATF level with the engine on idle? When was the last time the ATF and the strainer was changed? If the strainer is blocked it will restrict the flow of ATF to the valves.

I have an invoice for it being done about 45k ago, I don't know if its been done since. I've checked it at idle when cold & its bang in the middle of the dip stick markers & looks nice & pink. I've got a trip planned and I'm changing the trans filter & fluid before I go.
Just seems weird that it locks and then un locks straight away and then a few seconds later it changes up.

I'm pretty sure the book says the ATF should be changed every 30K. so it worth doing. ATF and strainer will cost less than 30 quid. Remember that there are 2 'O' rings to replace (I failed to spot one when I did mine).

Looks like job for this week is gearbox oil & filter change then, might as well do transfer box & axles while I'm under there, at least I'll know its been done then.

From 4th to fifth mine feels like it goes 4th 5th then "6th" I know there is no sixth.. My atf is above the level at idle, quite a bit actualy.

sorry, i did a thread about it a week ago and forgot to check the replies, 4 gears then torque converter locks... I understand. Cheers.

What does it mean, If it locks out then downshifts back to fourth then locks out again? Under light acceleration?
