Stolen headlights

Hi - This is no joke my headlights have been stolen off my Discovery 2 twice now. In 2007 and in Aug this year (09). It seems to be really easy as I have CCTV of them doing it and it took 11 seconds! Two screw drivers and they break them off. I'm in Barnsley and have heard there is a spate of this in S Yorks. The garages I've rung up don't have any suggestions (or the Police). The Landrover Garage said it would be hard to retrofit old style lights as the part sizes/fittings are different. I have not been able find out if I can get a wrap around bull bar. Whilst I am parking right up to the garage (Disco is too big to fit inside it) the bumper means I can't get close enough. And that slight slip as the hand break comes on means I have already rolled forward and dented the garage door. Doh! I like the idea of changing the alarm but what is the price of this? I'm also thinking about etching the plastic with the licence plate. And gates, and security lights, and landmines! It might sound funny but it has cost me 700 pounds in insurance claims and £2000 in repairs for the insurance company (re rewiring as they cut off the connectors, parts and the respray). Very annoying and the wife is now telling be to sell the thing...

With the 2003 disco2 headlights, they are only screw onto a plastic trim, swinging on them and they will snap. Dont get me wrong they go with a crack. Bet its over Rotherham,Doncaster way, been a spate of this over there.

Give him his lights back!! :p

They go for so much on ebay i paid less for mine (trade) from FPS than they go for 2nd hand (or stolen) on ebay, they were a pain in the ass to fit to my 300tdi too, wing modification, wiring mods, slam panel mods, look cool on though with a shadow bumper and steering guard, not helpin much am i.

What about a big b**tard light with PIR which sets off an alarm inside the house, only cheap, off road style light guards?

Hmm,
I have just stumbled across this post so i thought i would register and have my two penneth worth!!

I woke up one morning to find my lights of my Discovery stolen too, i am also in South Yorkshire, Rotherham!

Needless to say, i was FUMING, particularly when i found out how much they were to replace! I got onto E-bay and found someone who was 3 miles away from me! I decided to tell him i was updating my discovery and wanted the lights to upgrade, could i collect! He was more than happy to do this.. I went round and the lights were definately stolen, however they werent mine!!

Cut a long story short, this individual continued selling lights and had sold numerous by looking at his feedback! i spoke to the local Police SGT for this area and advised her of this individual.. They were about as interested as a......

Anyway, Rant over - On a positive note, i have managed to secure mine so they cannot be taken out, i have also adjusted my normal car alarm to cover the lights, so even a slight move of the lights will set the alarm off.

they break bloody easily too - I have had a couple to do bulb changes on and the front fixing screws just rotate in the housing. Crap design if yu ask me. make sure the attachment screws are well greased.

All those who have had their lights stolen should pay this muppet a visit, maybe he might think twice then!!

The only problem i have now is that to change a bulb it will take me 20mins just to get the bloody cluster out!!

Things you have to do to stop the theiving tw..ts

Etch is good.

Alarm is so so! 11 seconds to nick it. Could you even get to the window in that time never mind out to your lights! Or the car setting off down the road!

Alarm would be good if you fitted say a masterblaster but would need mains hook up or fit it near the garage door and have a lead that connects to the car. That way the alarm goes off and its 127db at which point they either have heart failure or bugger off sharpish as the whole street is woken

Was going to work out if it would work via an inverter so could mount it under the car but not bothered yet. (May do when I get my headlight conversion! lol)

I have a device that is monitored remotly and if the alarm triggers the office call me and tell me one where my car is 2 if its moving 3 what has been activated. Have it on all the company cars.

Thing with a vibration/viper is that the cat may trigger it!

Oh and to nick a cat I would use a hydrolic cutter/spreader like they do in scrap yards they do a hand version. Fine as long as the owner dont try drive off 1/2 way through!

i hope you tied the **** to your rear bumper and dragged him along behind you for 20 miles or so....

Ok just had a quick look and it can be done but the inverter would have to be a big boy! The plus side is that it could be used for other things when not protecting the car.

Coupled to an Inverter...

That would stop most people in their tracks, may even kill them with the shock! We have some in use in buildings and they scare the sh1t out of you when you know they are there!!!

And this is the bad boy they use to nick cats silent but deadly! Also seen them cut big grade 10 padlocks and other security features like a hot knife and butter!

they are screwed into the slam panel and cannot be removed without opening the bonnet

Trust me I once witnessed a gypsy bite through a metal chain, granted not the type that you use to tie a motorbike down but certainly a mouth full!

Stuff like that won’t work as it can be removed with force yet still be quiet enough to avoid been detected.

The only way to move them on is to use loud alarms and bright lights!

The whole thing with security is the response! No point if it slows them down as long as there is no response they will sit there for 3 weeks and have it! If every time they walk up your drive the curtains twitch and the alarm and lights go off they will soon think bugger it!

A Device which automatically triggers a Shotgun blank cartridge is what we need! Someone needs to find a way to fit a sawn off under the bonnet with a wire connection to the trigger. Pull the lights, Pull the trigger and boom! Copp for that you theivin son of a bitch!

Hopefully it will be enough to give them a heart attack! If that doesnt work, they will be subject to a rather fast, very nasty dog chasing them down the street!
