Steps or rock/tree sliders on a 110"

Firstly I'd like to apologise in advance because I know you've covered this before, I have done searches and read relevant posts but not really found what I'm looking for

I have this



But really dislike the folding steps, I had a pair of new takeoffs on the last defender and they didn't last a year before the rust stains started showing. This pairs well past that

I guess I need steps as the missus is a shortarse and struggles getting in and out especially wearing a skirt
I like rock/tree sliders but being honest I'm never going to off road it as I'm a woose [is that how you spell woose?], but steps don't really look that strong?

I found a picture of a of pair of rock/tree sliders where the tree sliding rail was angled down from the slider and had chequer plate on top of it forming a lower step, I've looked and looked and can't find it again, done searches on here and google but no luck.

So does anyone know of someone making rock sliders with tree sliding rails sloping down to provide a lower step?

In the meantime I've been looking and like these from Masai but the sliders form a high step and the steps only clamp on, how long will they last, do you have to keep tightening them up?

Who can recommend a decent spare wheel swing away carrier? got sick of my rear door bouncing up and down

Do what I did and make 'em ..

The 'step' or treeslider part is angled down. Doesn't lose much in the way of clearance 'cos the petrol tank is the same height above ground ..

steps won't take rock abuse, but they are fine.

i can bounce up and down all day on these and they arn't going anywhere.

they have the rod in the back and a couple of big bolts holding them up.

Hi ya Paul

Yep I'm a sheet metal worker welder by trade and would love to make them, got no where to do it. New house garage full to the brim and haven't the foggiest where to buy a bit of metal round here, so much to get sorted here that it's easier to pay over the odds and get them ready made.

I was worried that because they were designed as steps they'd be pretty naff like the 'Land Rover' ones already fitted, not to many round here to go and look at so stuck with pic's on the net

Sorry cant recommend any thing as im a tight git and make stuff myself but I like the look off the tree sliders in your link, they dont look to stick out to far and still give you a step

I bought some cheap steps for mine (dont ask me where cos I cant remember now)



theyve done pretty well, small dent in one, but theve been scaped on banks, bashed on roacks and faired much better than I expected.

I'd be making em myself Iann if I'd had room and workshop [ok shed] was setup, Masai seem to have a good name, not seen anyone slagging their products off yet.
I prefer the tree sliders, the black finish looks better and you know they've got to be a thicker gauge steel than the steps

Now that's a set of steps Tim, but they're pretty much the same height as the tree sliders, my mrs is only 5'4"

Heheh, I made 'em where you see 'em, just behind the green gate and in front of the Disco .. about 1m x 3m space ... Same way I made the front bumper, hang things off where they fit and weld away ..

i do like them :scratching_chin: i always measure angles wrong, but they don't look too bad to make.

know what size tube and box you used? err god the suns frazzled my brain.. your's is a 90 and mines a 110

The box is 50mm x 50mm and the tube is about 40mm. The get the angles I just cut them off with an angle grinder, offered 'em up and tacked them together then moved them to get it looking right!

I used shateboard sticky back non-slip decking on the tops of the step bits and it's bloody brilliant stuff! Way better than knurking or tread plate or anything I've used before ..

I found them on google but only for sale in oz, couldn't find a UK supplier or British price [on Ozzy site they were over a $1000 of their dollars]

I love them, look fantastic, pricey and it'll be a really high step, well sill height.

Make the Masai ones look a bit tame which is a shame coz I was gonna buy them
