Hi All,

A couple of days ago my freebie started to make a horrible and expensive sounding bearing noise. It appears to come front the front left side.

I'm thinking wheel bearing, or crap in the brake.

This morning, I notice that everytime to turn left, I can feel a knock through the floor.

Would a knackered wheel bearing cause this, or should i be looking for a steering issue aswell?

On a side note, theres been a knocking on the front suspesion for a while, that 5 different garages (including the stealers) cannot find. This knock did not go away after the lower arm and ball joints where chnaged.

Thanks

Dave

Have you changed your drop links on the front?
Also - get under and give the drive shaft a shake up and down, there should be no more than 0.5mm play up and down...could be a VC joint on the shaft.
Generally if you hear a knock from a wheel when only turning one direction it would indicate a bearing..

Hi Joe,

The guys at one of the garages (not the dealers) were pretty in depth and even checked the upper strut mounts, they found nothing to report. The knock on the suspension usually happens when the steering is not straight and I can't tell which side it comes from. I was starting to thing that its movement in the steering rack to be honest. Unless it quite rough (cobbled road), then it happens in a straight line too.

The bearing noise seems to come from the front, I thing it the nearside, but it hard to tell. There a knock when turning the steering to the left. The noise is worst when slowing down, and moving at less that about 40mph. (yup, I know what you are thinking, but the thought of it being the IRD scares the crap outta me :( )

Cheers

Dave

jack it up and do the woble test thats put you hand on the top and bottom of your wheel and see if it will move also have you checked you anti roll bar

Just had it checked out at garage, there's no play in the front bearings or the drive shaft bearings

They concluded that its just tyre noise, and recommended taking the ATs off after winter. I think that maybe I am imagining the noise and it not actually there. Not amusing.

Gonna call atom transmissions and get the ird checked out, I think.

Cheers guys.

Hello,

Been to Atom transmissions this morning, found some crap between the brake disc and the backplate on the nearside front.

Also, it looks like the IRD bearings are kaput.

Quick update :

IRD been off, stripped down and rebuilt, new shims and bearings, some worn gears reaplaced.

The noise is still there.

Front wheel bearings changed, no different.

Looks like the issue is the Jatco box. Its getting expensive!!

ive got the same sort of knock, only on right hand down, nearside wheel, ive changed anti roll bar bushes, centralised roll bar, track rod balls, droplinks (twice) knocking still there, wasnt even found in an MOT so for now im just living with it, obviously would like to get it sorted, but i dont really wanna go down the process of elimination route and spend money on something that wont solve the problem, so any more input on this would be great as im kean to know too.

I had a random knock. Was the anti roll bar knocking against the metal suspension bit by the side of it.
