Hi

I have had a search and cant find the answer to my question. Bought a 3 piece steering guard to fit and it doesnt really fit to well where the front bolts should fix to the chassis.

The chassis has a tube going forwards under the bumper for the jack and this tube has a couple of plates at an angle that join the tube to the main rail of the chassis. You can see it better in the pictures than i can explain it :(

The reality is there is a gap of about 20mm between the side piece of the guard and the tube for the jack. I can put a spacer in to pack it out but thats perhaps a bit crap.

Is there a better make of guard to fit the chassis with its jacking points that I have?

Could not find a thread that answered the question or pics on the internet of other guards that perhaps fit better.

Cheers for any advice.

Ian

Hi, which bits ****e, the guard or the chassis :(

Hope you mean the guard. It came from Craddocks but I think it's going back cause it doesn't really fit the chassis right and I don't want to bodge it. Make is land marque or something, it's got like a L cut into the main plate which looks gay!

Thanks for the reply.

Why not just use longer bolts instead of packing it out? Never seen those tube jacking points on a chassis before

It's not about the length of the bolt.

Needs something to pack the gap between the side of the steering guard bracket to the jacking tube as the gap is about 20mm as the tube is not flush with the side of the main chassis rail. The second picture shows the potential gap.

Not sure why my chassis seems different to others, it was rechassied years ago by a previous owner but I don't know Know if it was Richards, marsland etc...

Was on about the guard. Never seen one that poorly made before.

Thanks for the replies. Guard is going back, appreciate the comments.

Thank god it's not the chassis that's poorly made:eek:

Has anyone ever seen a chassis with tubes at the front for jacking? I get the feeling it's different to normal but I am no expert. Far from an expert in truth!

Yes quite common on disco's But that design and build quality looks ****e. Here's my old disco guard. Notice the tubes are inboard of the recovery eyes and were actuall welded full length, to the side of the guard

Just re read your post and Confused?? are you saying that the tubes were already there??? or are they part of the Steering guard??? If they are part of the chassis Then no they're not "normal" Defenders have a round hole in the chassis legs to all the use of a pillar jack or an highlift fitted with an adaptor. Discoveries don't have anything to allow the use of an hilift.

Hi mate. I've got the pro trac one on my 90 and was very impressed with the quality. Got it from m-m they are only 30 mins away from Stourbridge. Can't recommend them highly enough. My mrs lives near Stourbridge and mom lives in Kingswinford so might see you driving around some time. Dark silver 90 with loads of off road kit on it.

I have a Rebel guard fitted to my 1997 300tdi and it is one piece and very solid. I am not familiar with the jacking slots but anyway Rebel do have a website you can google and make your mind up.... mine still looks as good 3 years later, no rust... make sure you fit proper bolts that are rated and wont just shear off :)
