Steel Wheels?

I'm in Hereford, and have been watching ebay like a bloody hawk, but it looks like all the wheels and tyres that are coming up are a good 100 miles away. I've emailed a guy from Derbyshire who is breaking a 109 safari, and is offering 4 of what look like decent 7.50/16 tyres, on original steel rims, for well under 100 quid. If he had been within 50 miles, I would have gone and collected today, but unfortunately, to collect them it's a 250 mile round trip, and don't think I can do that, it's back to the drawing board, and watching ebay every day for me lol.

You do know that std Defender wheels will bolt straight on don't you?

The only thing I would suggest you remember is that with narrower tyres and a 2+ton Disco, you are reducing the grip patch for on-road purposes.

Well from what I gather, the old series steel wheels are 5.5 inch, whereas the defender ones are 6.5 inch?

I think the disco alloys I have on at the moment at 7 inch, and I'm after something skinnier, so a series steel with a 7.00/16 or 7.50/16 tyre would be just the job.

Trouble is finding the bloody things within collection distance.

Nothing wrong with standard wheels n tyres. I bet my wheel bearing last way longer than yours n me tyres are loads cheaper :p

205's on standard steel wheels

do they work in 4ft deep mud n water;)..my pet snake has more gnd clearance than that:p

I think I'd be a bit wary about using 5.5" as they will be old and even if in good condition they probably wouldn't have been designed for the weight of a Disco, where long wheelbase and 'fender wheels would be, I guess.

your saying you want skinny weels for 7.50s or 205s.but there both going to be the same witdth no mata what wheel you put them on.you cant change the width ov a tyre.its the sidewall that mite look a bit different

I run standard series wheels on mine with 750x16 on them. I have painted all the wheels gloss black and it looks a 'proper job'
It would look 'ugly' if you have a highly polished 'chrome an all' disco but mine is painted in mat black with many off road toys and it looks like a workhorse not a show pony! It alters the speedo reading a bit but i think gives better mpg.

You can get thin Insa turbos with the same rolling radius as Disco tyres but I just forget the size.

Better grip in the wet though arn't they..?

Sorry mate but ABSOLUTELY WRONG. You'll be skating better than Torville and Dean with narrow wheels and tyres on.

All the time you're talking about the 'look' of the vehicle with no reference at all to it's safety and how it might affect other road users.

Seems totally selfish to me and frankly a bit stupid.

I wasn't talking about the 'look'..! I just drive a standard disco on standard wheels n tyres.
I used to have a mk 1 golf that drove ok in the wet. After some wider tyres went on it was like driving on ice in the wet.. I know a golf isn't a landy etc, but I just thought there would be similarities..

why do Defenders in the base spec have narrow tyres? we live in the lakes, the farmers around here have bought all sorts to replace the landys over the years, ie Rangers, fourtracks, Isuzu etc, but the ones who have terrain, proper hills and tracks, have either stuck to a defender or gone back to a defender, all the base models with narrow tyres 205's etc,
so why not just get a normal set of steels and narrow tyres, after all it is his choice, whatever we think it looks like, my opinion Boring!!! can't beat a good set of wheels and tyres
