Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

The earth lead connection on the starter is shiny and clean. I checked it and cleaned it and tightened it right up yesterday.

This morning I went to car at top of bank and the battery turned it over but slowly and it wouldn't start. I rolled it down the bank and it jumped within 30 yards. Within 5 mins of running the battery is now starting it on it's own.

So I dunno. I don't want to buy a new battery and find it's the starter. I don't want to get a new starter and find out it's the battery.

That guy from the local auto electric place said if I take the starter off and take that to him then he will test it and tell me if it's any good. So that seems like a sensible thing to do as well as making that battery earth connection rock solid first.

Good luck with yours Gregomega

Well ...

I managed to get the bolt off that was holding the earth to the chassis. It was rusty and bent and covered in crap.

I've refixed earth to engine at the top. Car started straight away and as been left for half an hour today and is starting first time aggressively. Hopefully that's sorted the starting but I'm not holding my breath.

This busted off heater plug to sort out now.

Glad I didn't hold my breath.

Started car at 3pm. Then left it til 3.45 until I had to go pick wife up. Battery was turning start motor over reasonably quickly but it wouldn't start.

Jumped off another battery and started straight away.

So sorting the earth lead needed doing and it's improved things but I don't know whether this is battery, starter motor, fuel pumpleak?

Hi Col, pleased to hear that things are moving in the right direction.

Re the broken glowplug, if the car starts first go even on cold mornings I would be inclined to leave that well alone - it'll cost you some money and things have a nasty habit of going wrong - especially a job that, on the face of it, should be straightforward.

It's the feminine side of Land Rover coming to the fore........................

My brother has a 96 300 Tdi and once the cold weather set in it wouldn't start in the morning . He lives on a big hill so let it roll each morning and it started easily .:D
The battery was only 10 mths old and was supposed to be well up to the job ( the first battery he got 11 mths ago was sent back as it wouldn't start the Disco ) .
We do all our own repairs - but a friend in the trade has a new advanced battery tester . So he asked him to check the battery - and the tester said it was performing well below ' what it said on the tin '. :(
Its output was well below what was stated .
So he fitted a new battery - and it has started every morning since even though the temps are way down .
I feel battery problems are becoming more common over here - and that batteries are of poor quality .

Well the circus continues ...

1st thing this morning and it wouldn't start. tried jumping off a fully charged battery and it still wouldn't fire.

So I thought it was time to get that starter off and get it to that autoelectrician for testing/fixing.

All the pipes off as per the talk through ... 2 minutes.

Front top 13mm pin off ... 20 seconds

Bottom 15 nut off ( this had the earth lead on on this car ) ... 20 seconds

Rear top 13mm pin ... er ... oh dear ... that's not a 13mm pin. Someone has put a threaded bar into the female housing and then put a 'nut' on the bar to hold the start on. The nut is completely rounded and rusty as hell. No way is that coming off with a socket.

Looks like I may have inherited someone else's problem here.

Never mind ... it will have to come off. The only way I can think of is to hacksaw it off? Any other ideas?

Cheers

You can't get a hacksaw in there ... just no room at the back to get a sawing motion in even if I take the blade out of the hacksaw ( that's a junior hacksaw ).

I've tried hitting it with a large flathead driver and hammer but it's rock solid. It's just chiseling grooves into the nut but neither the nut or the bar is moving.

Ideas?
