Being new to the whole Land Rover thing, in fact new to the 4x4 thing too, I'm guessing 'tratters' refers to Defenders & they're jealous of the FBH because until recently a heater was something they could only dream of?!
 
same bypass as your picture.I only ever get a groan/rumble type noise just after start up,no other time.Thats why I think it'll be the alternator.

If it has only started since doing the EGR mod it could be the other end of that vacuum pipe needs blanking. If it was doing it before then you could be right.

It's why they keep going on about a gallon of petrol and matches!
If anyone were to take them up on their suggestion, they'd find themselves inundated by a bunch of cold tratter drivers all huddling round for warmth.
