Spec... High or low?

Hi everyone,

Im new and have a question - hopefully not too annoying (what can I say im new and im learning). So Im in the market for a D1 Auto. There have been a few coming up here and there. The question is... Is it worth holding out for a higher speced one or not? Im of two minds on it.

Obviously rust is the main factor but would you go for a high mileage ES or XS (I love the seats in the XS ) over a lower mileage S? At least with the S there are less things to go wrong...

Just wondered what everyone thought. Thanks for reading this and having me here!

Not a question for an ES owner, but when u say there's less to go wrong with an S the S had a few options listed, although it didn't have sunroofs as standard or electric seats, heated windscreen and air condition but it has electric windows and mirrors. Less to go wrong, so what will that be ?
 
Interesting Discool, thanks for responding. I guess thats why I'm asking. I was under the impression the average ES had alot more additional things ( and therfore the potential to go wrong) compared to the S. Is that not the case? Would you recommend searching out/ waiting for a higher spec one over an S then? Even with high mileage?
 
Make a list of the things you feel essential and things you wouldn't miss.
Essential for me: leccy windows, leccy mirrors.

Then look at how much money/hassle to get them fixed if they go wrong, as they will.
If you are happy fixing leaking sunroofs etc. then go for it.

Poverty spec for me all the way.

Less to go wrong
 
ive got xs with edc , lekky bits n bobs , wheel arch trims , airflow meter abs etc etc , i only use it off road ( detest the feel of disco's as road cars ) and electrics play up ALL the time , this week i have front ligts that come on and off flickering even without the lights switched on . Also the hazards come on when you go over bumps :) . leather seats are ok tho .
Buy a bog std one and fit the goodies you want :)
 
As stated above make a list of what u want or must have.

There's some bits of kit you can't avoid like five rear seats and sunroofs on some models, mine have never been used and my sunroofs only opened once a year to clean, electric seats mine are set and that's it much like adjustment of the door mirrors, and as for fog lights I don't see much fog now days and I've never been out at night in fog, the list could go on.

I even had a few test drives on the range of D2s and there's lots of stuff they have I would never use, folding mirrors, hill decent control, suspension that raises etc.

If you are predominantly using this new Disco for road use, go for an ES no question.

For the tiny amount more you might pay, you get so much more of a car. Re the reliability of a posh Disco, really no different to a basic one; Disco ownership is a hobby not just a means of transport. It's a bit like being set a challenge - does your Disco work like new? When you can answer 'yes' you're a real LR man.

Well I suppose that is the point - I guess I need to decide to what extent of a challenge I wish to accept!
 
As said, it depends what you want. If the toys are important to you, then get a top spec one.

Sunroofs are likely to leak, but if you get a decent car and look after the sunroofs you shouldn't have to worry too much. I think they're nice to have and make the interior a lot brighter. Alternatively, if you're not bothered about having them and don't want the hassle - get one without.

I like having all the options - I ideally wanted an ES but when I viewed my GS, I couldn't not buy it. I wish I had leather seats (just for vanity really) but it's worth bearing in mind you can't retrofit electric leather seats without faffing about if that's something you'd want to do.


In the end, for me, it came down to vehicle condition. You won't find many really tidy Disco 1's now :(


No matter what you pick, I'm sure you'll love it! :D

In the end I went without A/C as on an old car it will be broken anyway. I solved the problem by buying a sun blind set which keeps it cool.

Even if sunroofs don't leak, the drains exit into the A pillar and supply nice rust inducing moisture into the pillar itself. So they are more prone to rot there with sunroofs.

ABS can be a bit of a pain and like to go wrong on older cars. You can be chasing the problem for ages.

Just get the first one you see that isn't rusty. Discovery refers to the fact that when you think you've bought one that isn't rusty, but when you go exploring, it certainly is.

You're right about the AC - mine doesn't work, pump isn't seized but it won't come on. I got a bargain aircon service and regas through groupon which I've booked in for next week, somehow I don't see it working though.

Oh dear is all doom and gloom here :D

I have none of the of the above issues or any other for that matter, a/c is still blowing out 8 to 10c when the ambient temps out side are 30c.
Water will only get into the sunroof drains if the seal is faulty or the sunroof is opened and it's wet.
My ABS still functions or it did the last time my wheels locked up, which was in the snow back in the winter 2012/13 :)

Not all disco are problems.....
