Think I found out what the whining noise is..........erm.........was.

Cruising along the dual carriageway earlier today when there was a kind of crunch/bang from underneath somewhere followed by some vibration (which passed after a few hundred yards) then some low pitch squealing then not much at all..............

Got me home, but changing down and letting the clutch up is jerky and kind squealy, accelarating and changing up is ok.

Im guessing IRD

maybe gearbox, IRD would give problems all the time, not just changing down ? have you checked vcu ?

No not really, always had a 'slight' binding effect on full lock at manouvering speed, read up on it and took it to be normal on the Hippo.

Been getting a fairlt low pitched whining, bit like tyre noise for a couple of days, then today, as above.

Got me home, but as described, changing down and letting the clutch up using the engine as a brake gives of this whining kind woowoowoowoo noise.

Let it all cool off and took it out around the block, no problems accelarating or changing up through the whole box, let the throttle off though and the above happens.

Did a full lock reverse and got the 'banging' noise and short loss of drive. Straight line reverse no problem.
