I am getting GT Adventuros and the big decision, other than price is that they are not directional. Could it be that directional tyres are no good for reversing out of a sticky situation? Umm

Event tyres - I only ever use them. They have fitted tyres to my misses Zafira, my Beemer, my Audi A8 and my Carrera 4. Yeah I had a good job once but that's another story. The service is always first class. The care taken to protect wheels is exceptional and the communication is second to none.
 
I was going to go with Event-Tyres until I phoned Paddock Spares to try and get a deal out of them! As it happens, they agreed and offered a good price, so they are now the cheapest because I'll get everything through the post, ready fitted, valved, balanced and good to go (hopefully)!

No tolerance for her mate - brought her a Disco when we got together some years ago and she couldn't park the damn thing so wouldn't drive it. Therefore she ended up with the Zafira as we need a car with seven seats and I wasnt going to have an MPV. Since then I lost my job and had to take a lower salary and with the economy as it is we cant afford to change it now :D Not that I would do as it is super reliable and really cheap to run

Must say I dont miss the cars and really enjoy knocking around in the Disco. No money but no stress either - Happy Days

Defender fitment RTC steering damper!

I am lost for words! What a fantastic job mate! Bought myself a 300TDi Disco 1 last November and so far have changed the tyres from Kingpin MTs to BFG ATs and added some chequer plating.

Well I didn't do it, my local mechanic did it. At the moment it's only really suitable for pootling round Derbyshire but hope to get it prepped for some serious off-roading!

You've really inspired me to carry out work myself on my Landy, although I am a 22 yr old psychology student who doesn't know the difference between a phillips head screw driver and....the other one :( Maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration! Anyway thanks for the pictures and info, definitely going to help me in my mission!

Again...Lost for words :D

That steering damper looks really nice. Is it the self cantering one and did all the bits come with the kit?

I also notice that the dust plates are missing from the disc brakes. Is this a conscious mod and taken from all the discs brakes or just fell of the offside front like mine? I'm asking as I'm not sure if to put it back on. New ones are £10 each.
 
No worries josh, that's what it's all about mate.

Good thing about land rovers, in particular d1 is that they're cheap so it's not too much of a deal if you mess it up.

Dead easy to work on and practice makes perfect.

Ok I know what I'm doing and have the tools/experience to get it right, but at least you've got the ideas to give it a go :)

Yeah it's called a Return To Centre damper. Not tried it yet but it's getting towed to Macclesfield for its new exhaust today so it might come on handy at roundabouts with no power steering! :D

The fitting kit is a Glyn Lewis item. It's a mish mash of disco chassis plate and defender fitment drag link bracket.

Also yes no mud shields. When you're axle deep (often deeper) the mud is not going to be stopped by a pesky piece of steel sheet, so you still get hubs full of mud.

But then when it comes to jetwashing all of a sudden they become jetwash kryptonite, and you can't wash the back if the discs out.

So, theyre no good for an off roader!
 
Let me know how you get on with the damper. I take it it is fitted to a sumo bar. Must get that set up once I've sold the youngest child. (low mileage, one owner from new, sorry two - I'm her stepdad lol. Has a tendency to be noisy and cost a ****ing fortune to run hahaha)

I will remove the shields all round then. Tbh I like the look without anyway.

Let me know what the exhaust sounds like.straight through from your tubular headers?
 
Ian. Yeah it's a hd bar, technically it's a terrafirma set (£100) but they're all similar.

Must have IMO, couldn't imagine doing what I do on standard bars!

Yeah the exhaust will be ready on Friday latest, they're fitting a 5" round silencer in the middle I think, should be about right says the guy :D

Will get a vid of the full system up anyway :)
 
Would like another V8 - especially a supercharged one from an XKR Jaguar. That would be nice eh?

Like the bars and will get one myself when all done. Need a steering guard too come to think of it, and a tank guard and ...................

Try to avoid a steering guard IMO.

some people like them, some don't. My argument is that it gets stuck in the mud, and doesn't let your tyres get a purchase soon enough. Better to slowly scrabble than smash into an obstacle and let the guard bounce you up. Depends on your driving style.

The lad I bought my sliders and bumpers off is SLOWLY (like it hasn't progressed much each time I've been to his house) building a challenge truck, 90 cab, full space frame, Dana axles and an XKR engine.

He's got it all sat there, last thing I saw he was turning up billet hubs to fit land rover wheels directly to the Dana axles.

Anyway yeah he tells me it'll 'be proper stuff eventually' :D
 
Great looking jeep there pal , thought the article in LRM was a touch short though tbh seen as its such a highly modded disco .

Could you tell me where your winch bumper is from ? I have been looking for some time for a bumper but am really picky on what i want . I want one that sits nice and tight into the front end so its quite discrete . Awkward i know :rolleyes:

The winch bumper I'm not exactly sure but im led to believe its a britpart, although I didn't buy it new myself!

Steering guards

I hadn't really thought of how you would use one as a driving style aide, ie bouncing off obstacles. It hadn't occurred to me that is what they were perhaps for.

My thoughts were that they would simply protect obstacles that were approached unseen, tree stumps and rocks and the like.

My last Disco had a full on bull bar with a built in steering guard. The last time I took it off roading I got a little too enthusiastic on some humps down a green lane and suddenly the whole bullbat got ripped off the chassis. Well almost. I sheared two bolts out of the three each side.
