As my partner drives the Freelander most of the time at the moment it seems every time I get in it there is an issue I didn't know about. Iv'e got in for 1/ smell of diesel. It was the HP fuel injection pump ,oooch, which lead to discovering the worn turbo pipe and the bodge on the bolts / screws holding the air intake moulding, and rear diff bushes 2/ Clunk turning right o/s ball joint still to be fixed.

Tonight we popped out to get some shopping driving down the road Carole says are the lights on? I assumed it was just the dusk and road lighting. As we pull up it's obvious the headlight bulb has gone. I've now changed both dip beam bulbs since we have had the car which was about 2 years ago. Did you notice this I asked optimistically? I thought it was a bit dull last night but I forgot to say......is the reply. My partner works Mon-Fri with Tue off and doesn't normally get back until 20:00 and reverses in so I don't see the front on our CCTV.

At least the bulbs are easy to change when I changed one on my Focus I took lots of skin off .
Maybe if I never drive it it might not go wrong.

The joys of owning a freelander! We've had ours over a decade and the wife used to drive it mostly. And yes I did dread her coming home with "it's doing this, or its making a funny noise".The amount of times I've nearly traded it in, I've lost count. So last year we finally decided to get rid, get something newer and more powerful. So bought a Jeep and goodbye to the Freelander..... Thing is, I couldn't do it!! Yes it's an annoying piece of cr*p sometimes, but it's never broken down, never let me down and I've never got stuck anywhere(and I've given it some stick) So I sold my trusty Ford fusion, swapped the Freelander into my name and we now have two 4x4's. It's very much a love hate relationship, but as you see it has a hold on me. And yes, if you look in the right light, you can see MUG on my forehead. Enjoy Mike.

Thanks Mike . I actually like the car. I don't mind doing a bit of work on vehicles and "sensible" cars have never really been my thing I've had two TR7s and even an Alfasud before. When I did buy a sensible car after being nagged and nagged by my ex wife it broke down and was more unreliable than the not sensible ones. I just wish Carole would tell me, when things are not as they should be, so I can get it sorted. Last year I got into it after for ages. How long has it been pulling I asked ? Pulling? Yes as I took my hands off the steering wheel and the car made a bee line for the ditch.

it is the same thing here my wife's car is a 1998 Freelander 1800 petrol she has owned it since 2001 so 15 years she had the head gasket done many years ago then 3 weeks ago she said my car is using water so I took a look unable to do much as I had a ne knee on 18th December and it is still painful, I asked the wife to bring some water out to me, I put it in and it just disappeared so out she comes with more and three top ups of the header tank and it was holding some at least , next morning I went out and started it and chug chug chug then running normal I immediately knew it was head gasket again and unable to do anything I booked it in with a garage we know they did the sniff test and yes head gasket gone so we had it done £350 all in was a good price I think and the car is back to normal thank god , it has just done about 80,000 miles and still looks good but as soon as my leg is better we are going to give it a good clean and it wants a drivers seat cover then we think she may be good for another 15 years. LOL but I did not mention march is MOT time on it although the last one it passed with no advisories .

My wifes Freelander has a judder in the clutch, It is a pain sometimes but mostly not that bad. Could I make any sense of what she was saying? No! She kept saying "it won't go" I tried for days to get a sensible description of the fault as it was OK when I drove it but no, "it just won't go" was the best she could come up with.

The wife & I both work from home, so I don't ever get to drive our '2nd car' and the wife rarely. Which is great for the kids - cos they get a free car! So long as they pay for the fuel and tax on it they're free to use it. I though generally take it for its warrants (MOTs) and pay for that - but I make sure 1 of them also comes along for the 'inconvenience' of car ownership! I got in it last month to take it for its WOF, turned off the drive and was greeted with a loud tap tap tap when turning - obviously the CV. How long as it been doing that I ask my daughter, response, oh ages!

It's funny, but after ch'n leave home and eventually come back for celebrations... with a couple of drinks in them and their siblings egging them on they confess to all sorts of vehicular abuse! I used to see one vehicle come back with mud on its roof. When I did an oil change later on there was mud and dirt 'bulldozed' into the front crossmember and bits of broken branches stuck under the vehicle. Not us they said. I heard the truth years later - the little brat/s had drive the car along 20 to 25 km of forestry access tracks! Some Green lanes would be in better condition than what they had found. : |

Of course you would never have done such a thing when young. ;)
