I have just bought a new snorkel off ebay. It's the one with the mushroom top, all metal apart from a rubber flexi pipe joining the upper and lower section. Apparently they are designed to fit into the side air vents on your wing. (mine goes on the passenger side by the way) anyway, the problem is I dont have side air vents. My vents are on top of my wing!

So I'm guessing this is a common problem? so can I have some tips on fitting it please for a start, as I'm only going to get one chance at getting this right! Obviously I'll have to use a hole saw and drill a hole in the side of the wing somewhere, but to get the position right, what do I have to do?

The other thing is once thats all bolted on and sealed to the wing, how do you fit it on the inside? what I mean is where it comes ourt from the wing, I will have to somehow connect a pipe to the open hole in the wing/snorkel. I dont have anything else with the snorkel apart from the bits for the outside. i.e. the two pipes, two thin gaskets that go between the snorkel and the wing, I'm guessing the other gasket is to seal something to the wing on the inside, but what!?

And the rubber flexi hose and clamps to join them, the mushroom top with seal ring and clamp, and the window frame brackets and clamps, plus all the bolts to tighten all the clamps.

Do I have to just shove a pipe the best way I can up the hole from the inside of the wing where the snorkel exits into, and them just put a shed load of sealer around it to seal it, then run that pipe to my air filter box and seal that too?

Or am I missing something, and have to buy something else? nothing to do with fitting the snorkel to the airbox is mentioned in the instructions, nor is anything supplied for it. Can anyone help please? Why oh why dont they give you everything your going to need to do the job properly!!:mad:

The vents you have are for the heater not the engine air intake. What engine do you have?

I converted from a 2.5NA to a 200TDi and did not have the wing vent kit. So I cut the wing, fitted the backpart of the original 200TDi wing vent kit and then fitted the Mantec snorkel for the 200TDi to that. Cutting the hole is dead easy, in fact the whole job is. Mantec have a template for cutting the holes for the 200TDi vent which is specific to the vent not to the snorkel so will work whatever snorkel you have. The inner vent kit is a Landrover specific part and come with the hose that connect the inner vent to the air filter. When you fit the snorkel to the vent it replaces the old grill and should have either a seal or require silicone to seal it. Make sure you silicone all the hose fittings, around the lid on the airbox and the donkey dick drain on the bottom of the air box or you are wasting your time. I talk from hydrolocking an engine a day after I fitted a snorkel!!

I had a V8, but now have fitted a 200tdi disco engine with the disco airfilter. So i have to go to landrover then to get the internal fitting kit do I? Thats a pain. Why dont they supply the whole thing with the snorkel! after all your going to need it  Thanks for the advice. I will make sure its all sealed properly. What is 'Hydrolocking an engine' mean? lol.

I dont have any pics of mine but

on a defender with side vents, on the inside there's a plastic mould that goes into a tube, this tube would go to your airbox.

when you fit the snorkel on the outside, it screws into this plastic moulding and squeezes the inside and outside against the wing.

I would stick it back on e bay.

I fitted the right model snorkel to a 300tdi last year it was bearmarch with mushroom top and it was still a pain in the arse to fit and I would never do another one. The guy is right who says the inner plastic engine air breather is needed to fit the snorkel, without its just decoration.

If you are going to fit any snorkel to it you are going to need extra parts. I went round the houses with this and bought the 200TDi inner wing fitting in the end. It was about £30 new. There are plenty kicking around with the various breakers if you ring around.

It's not a difficult job to do. Couple of hours.

if you are a confident/competent DIY'er, you can dispense with the side fitting and route a continuous length of suitable hose from the air cleaner up through a wingtop hole ( you have to get the hole saw out!) and on up through the flexi which creates a sleeve. Teh foot of the flexi can be sealed to the wingtop to make it neat (sikaflex will do)

Alternate option is flog the wrong one you have aquired and buy a Southdown Defender 200/300Tdi/TD5 Snorkel Unfinished or similar.

Good Luck!

If I were you I'd get the tools out and make it fit. Its just gonna be a hassle selling the one you've got and buying another and youll end up losing money.
Take it up through the wing top, that way theres less angles in the pipework too which means better airflow.

Sounds like a plan! Thank you.:)
