my little brother as just bought a 98 xdi, 2 ltr rover l series engine.
aux belt snapped, and apparently the timing belt as snapped.

are these engines interference or not, need to know if engine is screwed or not.
my brother as had a mechanic look at it, who i have since spoke to. he as told my brother that the snapped aux belt as wrapped its self round the bottom crankshaft pulley, and in turn snapped the timing belt, fully believable until the mechanic insists that my brothers freelander as the bmw engine in it.
bmw engine was not in these motors till 2001. plus bmw engine as a chain not a belt.

my brother as very little knowledge of cars, and i live over 100 miles away.
i am an auto electrician with 20 years experiance, and i dont trust this mechanic. the quote he as givin my brother is also in my opinion, extremely extortionate, thats why im trying to find out some more info on these engines.

my brother and his missus are expecting there first kid any day now, and he is also meant to be driving down to me next month for my wedding. so really need some help on this asap.

if any members live in stockport that could sort my brothers car out without ripping him off would be really great.

its overhead cam so is liable to damage unlike a tdi with bendable push rods ,id look on ebay for another engine may be cheaper than fixing his

thanks for response, think my bro is gonna sell it as non runner and try and claw back some money, but if he decides to get it repaired, what should a repair cost him, and what do you reckon it might cost for replacement engine for one of these

If it's a 98 diesel Freelander then it WILL be an L series rover diesel if it's got the right engine in it.
