I am putting this thread up as it might help someone in the future. Recently had the warning "smart key not recognised" and unable to get the ignition to switch on and no start.
One set of keys working normally, so I changed the fob battery but no joy. I tried to use the Verify key feature on the diagnostics but had intermittent sucsess and never any sucsess at starting. The Diagnostics reported KVM module fitted to vehicle is the wrong type?? despite being the original fitment and working on one set of keys???
Various sources of information said pull fuse 17 and leave it for a minute, or disconnect battery and again leave it for a minute, none of them worked. One source said sit in the car use the fob to lock it, sit for a minute and unlock using the fob and start the engine, this did work BUT when swictching off it would go back to failed Smart key again.
Now not wanting to go to the main dealer if at all possible I checked with the wife exactly what had happened when it failed, and what she was doing. Here was the final answer to the problem, she was trying to move the passenger seat forward looking for a grab handle not knowing they were electric on the passenger side. I went to the seat and felt underneath, there is a large wirring harness that she had pulled. I reformed it to shape and Hey presto. Smart key all functioning correctly as if nothing had happened. I think a data cable must have been disturbed, because it seems impossible but it is exactly what happened.
