Sliding on ICE !

A group of us were out green laning over Christmas and I had my family with me. My missus had never been before but loved it.

At one point I got out to watch a recovery ahead and when I got back she was in the drivers seat, so fair enough I want to get her involved.

There was a lot of ice around and I am a cautious driver don't care if I get left behind I will only drive as fast as I feel safe and know the vehicle will handle the road and bends.

As she was driving she tried to keep up with the landy ahead, and we rounded a gentle bend on a wide bit at the end of one lane with a house on the bend ahead of us if that makes sence.

We were doing only about 20 mph (I would have been doing 10 if I was driving) and we felt the landy start to slide sideways towards the house and the BMW in the drive.

Luckily my wife, although no boy racer, has over 20 years experience and kept her feet off any of the pedals and steered us round.

If she had touched the braked just a little it would have ended very badly.

Ice is terrible, once you are out of control there is little you can do. Best thing is to make sure you stay in control.

Oh yes, on the next lane my wife managed to jump out of some ruts to start heading down a small bank, recover it and end up back on the deeply rutted lane at a 45 degree angle.

Got recovered from that and got another 20 yards before grounding out as she was going too slow.

Ended up being towed the length of the lane by a 90 as the last bit was too deeply rutted anyway.

Jumped out to watch others get dragged through and when I got back to mine she was in the passenger seat. She thought green laning would be just the same as normal driving.

She has been to an off road site and spent the whole day driving and loved it so she expected the same.
