a couple of recent threads,the school tables one in particular got me pondering, i didnt have any tables to spare , but there ws an old pine double bed, a part sheet of half inch plywood and some 2x2 timber in the garage.
we folded the back seat rest down and sliced the ply so it slid in through the rear door as far as the rear of the front seats, then cut two longitudinal beams and the appropriate length legs to just clear the seat backs, we used the slats from the bed as cross menbers to support the edges of the ply and one accross under each pair of legs to spread the load incase the disco floor aint as strong as it should be. a few screws held the timber frame together with the ply loose on top. the platform is approx 5 foot long... not long enough for 6 foot me to sleep on, however the front seats are then slid forward and the seat backs tilted as far forward as they will go , the ply then slides forward to hit the seatbacks, and the offcut placed on the frame adjacent to the rear door.... weve now got 5 foot eleven.... the front foot of ply is unsupported but if we sleep with heads at backdoor the unsopported ply is fine at the foot end. the cushions from an old caravan bed topped it off.
a couple of lengths and an offcut of 20 mm electrical conduit bent to a rough rectangle tied on the grab handles above the front doors and a couple of brackets in the rear corners made a rail to hold curtains made from a couple of old sheets split down the middle.
a mornings work and stuff out the garage has made a simple sleeping platform that can be fitted or removed in minutes....me and the boy spent a comfortable night in it in a coastal carpark in wales on thursday night on a two day trip taking in CAT, a gold mine and the national trust tin works at neath.
