Just noticed a little problem today, my sidelights and dashboard lights are coming on when I brake!

With all lights turned off and ignition on, when I brake my dashboard lights up (as it does when headlights are on) and my side lights illuminate. Take my foot off brake and they go out. Otherwise, all lights are working correctly, no bulbs have blown.

Any ideas please? Perhaps a bad earth?

loom front os chassis leg as it enters and rear exit. look for wear, some times internal as well.

Next rubber flaps at rear of rear lights the body seam saws through and won't blow fuses- check carefully

Check that you don't have a two pole (twin contact) bulb in place by mistake instead of a single pole (one contact) bulb, it sound like you may have!

Thanks everyone. Thats a good point about the brake bulbs actually, when one blew a few months ago I had problems getting the replacement to work, perhaps I put the wrong type in? Ill go have a look :)

Well I eventually got to the bottom of the problem.

Following advice here, I checked my brake bulbs and noticed one wasnt working. On removing it I found the lamp holder terminals had rusted and was full of water. I traced the leak to not having the foam gasket inbetween the brakelight lens and the body!! So I guess this had caused an earth problem?

New lens unit fitted, problem solved. Thanks everyone :)
