James,I wasnt implying that that particular thread was damaged and the cause of the snap,I should have made myself clear - I was suggesting that the cleaning of the threads should be added to the usual process when replacing the head,before blowing out with the air line.I was taught to do this as a matter of course,not to rectify thread damage but to clean out anything that may have stuck in the threads that could cause the bolt to compress the matter and give false torque readings.
I have always kept a couple of the headbolts that come out and cut grooves up the shaft (then run through a nut to clear swarf) so that I have custom thread cleaners to hand foeach engine type I encounter.Haynes and other books advise the use of a tap - in some situations this could possibly make a damaged thread worse.Thats how I was told,anyway.As I said,should make myself more clear-er....er....er....innit :confused:
