I must get hold of one of them Steve - I've actually drilled it out now, but thanks for the input.

Your welcome :)

has fitting an EGR blank actually made any difference ? I have read so much about them, but so far have held back, I have this thought that it will make warm up really slow (based on the exhaust gas speeds up the warm up time, by putting hot air into the intake circuit)

I would be interested in knowing if you think it has the benifits everyone is quoting, and what (if any) is downside ??

i have a Def TD5, and i did the blanking thing and removed the EGR valve as well. yer right on the warmup, it does take longer, but throttle response seems a lot better. no noticeable change anywhere else tho, but definately more pleasurable to drive.

the EGR was fitted as a compromise to satisfy the Yank market and their emission laws. There is no benefit in leaving it there...

it causes foul up in the intake tract by regurgitating exhaust gas to the clean air. Once you see the damage it has done already you'll want rid straight away!!

thats for sure...when i removed my EGR, the intake manifold was so fouled up inside i removed it and cleaned it...no way i was gonna leave it looking like that

I just fitted my EGR-blanking kit today and I went for a little run afterwards to see if I could tell any immediate difference.

To be honest not a lot !! I think she running a bit smoother and I had a sense of her maintaining speed easier up a hill near me.

The big issue was the amount of black tar-like substance in the inlet manifold.

I didn't have chance to strip down and clean it today, but I must.

Pictures included to show the job. I didn't blank off at the exhaust manifold as I couldn't budge the bolts, but as the pictures show I have blanked off after the valve as those bolts came undone easily. Can't see that there will be any difference in resutls doing this way as it's still blocked off - any comments?

now biglad, take apart your intake and off with the intercooler for an overnight petrol soak.

Marmite, you either love it or you hate it..!!

.....and I hate it !!

But it is 9pm and pitch black outside and -5° so I think it's gonna have to wait unitl tommorrow.

BTW what's involved in demounting the cast inlet manifold, for cleaning purposes. I thought I heard somewhere that the exhaust maifold has to come off at the same time and new gaskets all round - is that right?

New gaskets all round - definitely a good move (you'll not grt thr 2nd had ones to seal properly

Thats great but do you know if you have to take off the exhaust manifold as part of the job of taking off the inlet manifold?

I'm just trying to get the feel for the size of the job.

Cheers
Dave

Have just tried the 2 RAVE discs I have and they are no good - not noticed until today but these are for the american market and as such have little info in the way of diesel engines.

egr valve removal,

i removed my egr valve set up completely and replaced the contraption on the inlet manifold with a pipe made by pete at bell auto services, the difference is unreal, there is now less restriction in the inlet manifold so i get a lot better throttle response and better MPG to, this all helps working with the ECU flash and larger dastek intercooler, 20psi boost and about 190bhp she pulls like a train.

good luck with the rest of the work buddy.
