I recall reading somewhere on here that the shaking mot ramps are terrible on old cars.

Mot before last went in, steering feeling good but came out abit iffy.
Ended up being the steering shaft,it was a non genuine part so I put it down to that and replaced it with geniune, was as good as a fender steering can be.

Last MOT, fine going in but iffy now I've started driving it again.
Feels notchy the best way I can describe it.

Can't really keep replacing shafts, could something else be causing it

l assume you are talking about a Land Rover. The shaking MOT ramp shouldn't cause steering component failure.

After all, the vehicle (if it's a Land Rover) is designed to be driven in extreme off road conditions over rocks etc.

Next time try an OE part, some of the aftermarket ones aren't that great.

The current part on there is QME500031G, the previous one was a aftermarket one, I still have it but can't feel any play in the joints but the steering improved alot with the G part.

Pretty much everything on the front end is new Inc the steering box ,
IMO it feels like the notchyness seems to be in the steering shaft, is there anything in the upper shaft that wears?
Never been good with tracking down suspension/steering issues.

I'm going to spray the joints with some oil incase it's just abit stiff but I doubt that'll do anything being the part is only a year old.

Went for MOT other week. No problems.
I do go under once the shakers have finished & grease every TRE on steering.
Have not lubed up the steering shaft for ages.

only had to replace them shaft joints once in 10years(genuine) & odd spray of penetrating oil helps

It's certainly possible for the bearings in the upper part of the steering column to become notchy. When this happened to mine I just replaced the whole column - I don't think it is designed to allow you to replace the bearings separately. I seem to remember being able to do this on our Series many years ago but it doesn't look like it is possible on the Defender one.

Just been out,
new shaft came with those pre threadlocked bolts, I tightend them up to spec,
but now the top one was loose, like moving side to side on the upper shaft spline.

I've just had to tighten it down tighter than I felt comfortable doing to get it to stop.

Think the upper shaft splines must be abit worn.
