Hi,

I'm having issues... and need some help so I can avoid buying the wrong bits.

I have a 200 TDI Defender 90 but it has an early Discovery rear axle with disc brakes, non ABS. Last summer, not long after i got it I was on holiday in wales and it developed a horrible rumbling noise from the rear end. Basically the diff had gone.

I happened to be near a land rover repair chap and he replaced the Diff with a Landrover 90 one he had breaking as he had no discovery parts. At the time I didint appreciate the difference.. As part of replacing the diff he changed the half shafts to land rover ones and put drive flanges on. This was all done in a hurry to get me back on the road.

Recently whilst searching for the source of a rear axle oil leak I decided to remove (and replace) the stub axles so I could change the seal in the stub axle.

It turns out there is a problem. On the Discovery the half shafts have a raised, smooth section which is what the seal creates its seal around. The defender half-shafts do not have this as the axle sealing is done within the hub. Esseniattly the defender half shaft is too small and just flops about in the seal... no wonder oil was ****ing out everywhere!

Now I have a problem. I have a Defender 10 spline Diff on the back and need new half shafts that will fit into it but are Discovery style so the axle seal near the hub will work.

Looking into it I see there are two versions of the half-shaft for early Disco rear axles. One appears to have a raised section, the other appears fatter. Thing is, I havent seen them in the flesh to compare, my local 4x4 place didnt have them in stock.

There is part number 571882 for early Disco rear axles (to VIN JA032850): here is a photo of one from ebay

There is also FTC3186 which is from VIN JA032851.

Question is: Is the 10 spline end the same as a Defender? i.e. will it fit into the defender Diff.

Second question: which type to I buy? My gut feeling is FTC3186 with the raised seal.

Has anyone come across this problem before? I need to get this doen pronto. I bought this Landy for off-roading and am going out with a bunch of guys in two weeks! Its a trip we have been planning for months..... dont wanna drop out at last minute, my landy has barely touched anything but tarmac since I woned it!

Once I get the bits it wont take long to change... jut gotta get the right bits

Cheers in advance for any advice.

they are 2 types of diff 10 spline and 24 spline the same diff whether fitted to disco or defender, you cant just fit either or into wrong axle as 24 spline diffs have are shorter than 10 spline ,plus 24 spline seals on half shaft, disco 24 spline and 90 24 spline half shafts are the same, where are the half shafts that were fitted ?

I think the diffs are the same mate so I would go for a shaft that matches the axle , which would be a discovery one? I belive all 10 spline ends fit into the corresponding diffs ( ie.10 spline )

I wouldent waste my money on new 10 spliners though id buy second hand and save the rest to fit 24 spline axles like I did to mine :) fit second hand shafts:)

ftc3186 and ftc3187 would be the shafts with 10 spline and raised surface for stub axle seal ,why the bloke changed half shafts if when fitting another 10 spline diff is beyond me obviously knew nothing about lrs

Its possible it was a 24 spline diff. TBH im not sure after 9 months and I was much earlier into my landy learning experience at that point!

I think Im going to get either second hand 10 Spline FTC with raised edges or aftermarket. Time for more googling!

if it was 24 spline half shafts would be too short and shaft would have surface for seal, earlier shafts used 2 seals in hub,or your other option is to fit rtc3511 seal in hub, this is an oil seal that replaces grease seal fitted on inner side of hub
