Interesting.....
The book says:-
brown/red to terminal 1
white/red to terminal 2
White to terminal 3
both brown leads to terminal 4.
Mine's a petrol so I can't comment further!

that's what my book says too, but it didn't work for me, but mine started life as a petrol and had been fiddled with, which is why I ended up having to do all the testing I did to get it right.
 
Ok cheers guys, as with most landy problems "the plot thickens" haha. I gave up assuming anything is gonna simple a long time ago so I'll just see how I get on.

At least access isn't really a problem. The lightweight doesn't have a dashboard, just the bulkhead with the steering column sticking out.

Just out of interest which book are you guys talking about? I've got the Haynes manual and the original MOD manual at home. Unfortunately not to hand so I've got no idea what they have to say on the matter.

Strangely mine has 2 white/red wires and one of everything else, which seems to contradict the book. Why am I getting a nasty sinking feeling....?
 
workshop manual, downloaded mine free off the net somewhere, there is a thread on here with the links, I am sure there will be one available for the lightweight, download the parts manual too its most useful
 
I bought the workshop manual for the lightweight a while ago and it turned out to be a copy of the MOD manual that I already had which was a bit annoying. It's not really all that great to be honest. There are a lot of things that it doesn't cover.

Just found the bit you guys mentioned in the workshop manual. Annoyingly neither what it says for the petrol model or the diesel model seems to fit with the wires that I have on mine. Sounds like I might have to give it a little trial and error...
 
trouble is so many of these old landies have been fiddled with, I had to trace the wires back to where they came from to be sure of everything, found some had connections inside the loom and changed to a different colour wire. presumably when it was converted to diesel.
 
Blimey sounds like a nightmare. I had similar issues while replacing all the brakes pipes. It was a mystery until I realised that it was a big mix-up of imperial and metric fittings which had somehow evolved over the years. Took ages to get that all sorted. Good old land rovers!
 
When I opened up the dash on mine (nothing worked) there was a a bunch of eight wires just sticking out behind the clocks going nowhere. :(

Thankfully once traced into the engine the other end went nowhere either.

I didnt have a book to follow. Just worked on the principal that everything needed a live from a switch and earthed locally. Its ruddy splendid now.
