Series 3 diesel too slow???

Hi guys, having just bought my first landy (1972 88 2 1/4 diesel) I expected it to be slow. However I seem to be struggling to get above 40mph, is this normal? Also the dipstick housing appears to be covered with oil?
Sorry for the noobie questions, any help would be massively appreciated

what are the roads like where you live hilly or flat if hilly you may struggle to climb hills but sometimes peep fit range rover diffs to give them a bit more higher gearing if used on motorways but will struggle more on hills and or towing if a p o has fitted them, if the roads are pretty flat then there may be something wrong you say there is a lot of oil around the dip stick, with the engine running remove the oil filler cap and see if there is any fumes coming out of it if there is its possible the engine is getting tyres but generally the 2.25 diesel is pretty slow on hills good luck.

or a rebiuld didn't you test drive or open bonnet before parting with cash?

I ll have a look at that tommorow, what causes the fumes to come out the filler? Roads are mostly flat thankyou for the advice

Do you think its a good idea not to?

blow pass on nackered rings combustion fumes by passing pistons.thus lack of combustion no power.

Had a test drive but I d read some other Reviews saying that they were really slow, how fast should it go?

Your right, full service will be the way forward and see what happens

should sit at about 55 on the flat......take a bit of winding up to get there though

a good one flat out 55 - 60 mph 25 - 30 mpg but that depends on what tyres, diffs, are fitted and a good speedo fitted aswell.

the thing is with a 2.25 diesel is they always get thrashed due to them being gutless where as the 2.25 petrol has more power 20 bhp more but a lot less mpg hence the reason a lot of peeps convert to 200 tdi 111 bhp flat out 80 mph and between 35 - 40 mpg and climbs hills.

Sounds pretty normal for a tired old landy diesel. Think replacement engine or total rebuild of the one you've got. Remember you'll only get about 55mph out of it when rebuilt though. They weren't designed for today's roads.

Thanks for the advice guys, I m going to give it a service and use a sat nav to test it's speed, is it possible to over rev the engine whilst driving?

i wouldnt worry about over revving the engine while your driving it

You could compression test the engine - It'll give you some idea of how tired it is.
