I have a 1973 series 2a diesel land rover, its fair to say that the chassis is not in good condition (understatement of the day!) so i'd like to replace it.

I've dismantled the landy and now have a rolling chassis with engine and bulkhead, but not a lot more.

My questions are,
What should I replace the chassis with? Should I buy another series 2a chassis or are there other, better options?
The landy is only a runabout and is used to tow my boat, no massive off road aspirations -yet!

After that, where's the best place to get it from?

Should it be galvanised or not?

I'd appreciate your views.............

oil dripper

Not had the landy long, one of my next steps is to find it's history. No idea at the moment though - why?

Any reason for the s3 chassis, are they different?

Cheers

series 3 chassis in decent condition with logbook 1974 registered £250

fone green bros landrover specialist on 01706 378784 hope this helps matey

I'd get the right 2a chassis.

If you use a series 3 chassis ... handbrake pivot, front brake hoses, front-of-rear-tub mounts may not fit. Your 2a gearbox definitely won't fit and you won't want to take a grinder to a nice new galv one.

Both Richards and Marslands will make you the 'right' chassis if you tell them the suffix on your VIN (somewhere between A and H)

A 1974 one with logbook will be a Series 3 one.

Assuming yours is a proper 2a on a '73 plate, likely ex-military as said above, it possibly hasn't been registered as 'historic vehicle' in order to qualify for free road tax. Well worth checking the V5 ... they stopped making 2a by '71 and your landy should get the free tax status.

why wouldnt gearbox would fit series 11a + 3 share the same chassis part no nrc4642.hand brake rachet bolts on , i said series 3 as there usually available off the shelf and since chassis are the same it would be simpler series 11 does have some differences

Everything can indeed be made to fit a 3 chassis, hence Landy only needed to stock one part, hence they probably share the same part number.

But put it another way ... if you're going to buy a new standard chassis, there's got to be at least a 90% chance it'll come from Marlsand or Richards (?) ... and why would you buy the wrong part which although it would work out, would also give you some headscratching moments and leave you needing some series 3 parts to compensate, when they will both make you the right chassis?

I'm learning every day!!

My landy has a plastic grille, which apparently makes it an early series 3 (which fits the dates). Are there any other ways to confirm this?

I guess it's not "historic" now either.......

headlights will be on front of the wings rather than the centre grille pannel and the bonnet will appear thicker with a rolled lip at the front and the release catch will be in the grille on a single release catch rather than the later ones with a hook next to the catch the earlier s3 had the battery under the driveers seat n the later ones had the battery in the engine bay on the left side as you look at the front also had a zenith carb on all earlier models if its petrol :D:D:D:D

Series 3 has the heater inlet in the nearside wing, clocks behind the steering wheel, dashboard with heater controls and outlets, clutch slave cylinder on the nearside, headlights in wings (as did later S2), different door hinges and other bits I'm not sure about. And the chassis is slightly different. You should be able to tell from the chassis number, it might even still be on the chassis nearside front leg behind the wheel. Miracles do sometimes happen. Remember, a lot of older landys are bitsas - bits of this, bits of that, whatever was available to keep them on the road.
