Where do you start!
Rust - have a good look at the chassis and bulkhead for heavy corrosion, holes or badly bodged repairs.
Gearboxes are complex beasts - should change gears without too many clunks or noises, make sure hi\lo box works and 4wd engages and disengages.
Axles shouldn't be too leaky, look for play in the diff, wheel bearings and swivels - the swivels shouldn't be rusty or pitted.
Electrics are often bodged so make sure the wiring looks OK and everything works.
Engine should start easily and shouldn't smoke when running - smoke on start up is normal for diesel and not necessarily too much of a problem on petrol. A bit of oil leakage is common but not coolant.
Brakes are usually poor but that's just 'cos the design is so old - pedal shouldn't be too spongy and servo ones are better.

Don't expect miracles, this will be an old vehicle with probably a lot of fairly worn bits, it won't go very fast and the steering and brakes will be very different from a modern car. Everything can be fixed but at a cost, although a lot of the parts are still available and are reasonably cheap.

Good luck!
