Series 2 Lightweight Gearbox Issues

Back to Landy ownership after many years away.

Driving my '72 Series 2 Lightweight home yesterday (100+ mile motorway journey, at a steady 55), 4th + OD almost all of the way.

Pulled in to the motorway services for a comfort break... only to discover that reverse had gone missing!

I'm able to select reverse, but the lever doesn't seem to positively engage, with no rearward drive/propulsion. If I select and hold reverse, there is rearward drive, of sorts, accompanied by grinding and mashing!

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

@tottot is probably right, but check the little grub screw which goes into the back, top of the gearbox through the rounded top above the transfer box here. Mine was actually missing and it made all sorts of graunching, your may have screwed in a little if the locknut isn't tight.

I had a gear missing before too. A bolt came out inside the gearbox, it came out when draining the oil. The bolt tightens a clamp inside, its been so long at least that's what I think happened in my case. I could look up the proper name tomorrow. I think there are three pins that slide in and out of gearbox. The bolts clamp the pins to some forks, and those forks slide gears on the gearshaft?

Thanks everyone, for the guidance.

I think I've got to the bottom of it... BUT will keep the lid on my enthusiasm until the necessary part arrives!

Fingers-crossed!
This was the culprit... reverse gate hinge pin, slipped in the gate assy (pin had worn), allowing the gate to twist when selecting reverse, thus preventing clean gear selection.

Thanks everyone again, for the help and support.
