Hi - I'm currently in the Alps and there has been approx 6 foot of snow in the last 2 weeks and the FL2 is proving to be just the tool for these conditions.

I drive it mostly in semi-auto/commandshift mode as it significantly reduces the amount of braking needed when approaching icy and snowy corners.

One thing thas really started to bug me in that it seems to take too long to respond to change gear, especailly in 1st,2nd and 3rd. For example in 2nd gear it will rev up another 1000rpm before shifting.

Is there any way I can reduce the time between my selecting the gear and then the box actually changing gear - basically I want it to respond in th same way as the manual box.

I'm still kicking myself for not getting the manual - but if someone could help throw some light on how I could improve the drivabilit of semi-auto mode, then would be most appreciated.

It should be more or less instant provided your between preset rpm parameters for the gear your selecting. Is the manual up shift actually working or is it just changing up as it would in auto mode?

I drive in the Austrian alps and in Slovenia regularly, but I have an F1 auto TD4, which changes instantly in Sport/Commandshift mode, as long as I am within the rev limits for the gear I choose.

Most of the time I have it in fully auto mode for snow and ice as the box can do better than I can under almost all conditions - I am an ex-rally driver by the way.

I suggest you leave it in full auto or try left foot braking if you are really in a hurry - which I'm not these days. Having said that I don't see the point in what you say about reducing braking. I think you mean using less brake pedal as opposed to using the gear-box to reduce speed. Brakes are cheaper than gear-box parts is what they generally teach on advanced driving courses these days.

You have highlighted one of the several reasons I did not change to a F2 with it's PSA Peugeot Citroën engine coupled to a Ford G-Box. Did you own a F1 TD4 before the F2? Have you been on a LandRover F2 Experience Day?

I've been on two of them, as I was very keen on the F2 at first - one day was in mud the other in snow - so I wouldn't be choosing to use the semi-auto/commandshift mode in slippery conditions.

I'll be sticking with the BMW M47R and the Jatco box for the foreseeable future. This is my 2nd FL - this one is auto - the first one was manual - I'll never buy another manual again.

Your box might of course be faulty - but try changing your driving style - you will quite possibly be surprised.

Are there any fault codes? If it qorks in auto mode it should work in manual mode. Does the terrain responce make a different to the "allowd" gear shift pattern?
 
I have an auto FR2 & when in command shift it responds instantly as long as you are within the parameters. Do you switch to snow mode ? don't forget that also changes all the responses.
The autobox has adaptive learning so if always driven manually it must be confused,
The manual models are hard work to drive and the auto is a dream to drive and so much better. You either have something wrong or driving habits are very different to normal.

Sorry but that's not correct.
Its a Ford PSA 2.2 engine. Huge amounts of torque, 160BHP & 420NM torque.
Its mated really nicely to the auto-box, I regularly tow 2 tonnes with it often down to the South of France or Spain & it cruises a treat.

The manual (RTFM) does not mention anything regarding this, and the problem seems to be related to it revving too high in the lower gears (1st and 2nd) before shifting - it revs much higher than it would do when in fully automatic mode - unless of course I ask it to shift up maybe 1500 RPM before I would normally do this.

I appreciate that gear box parts are more expensive than brake parts, sometimes its safer to stay off the brakes when it is really slippery (ice and slush) descending on a steep slope. Plus I don't want to run the risk of excessive braking as I have seen what can happen when you cook your brakes.

I did buy this second hand, so maybe will investigate if it is possible for it to forget everything it has adaptive learned, so it can try and re-learn.

Slow shift becaue the box is cold maybe?

There is also the possibility of market programming. If your vehicle isnt programmed for cold climate operations, the extreme colds could be confusing the engine mapping. You can also have the issue with the thin air at high altitudes.
 
you need to check the vin no. against the update that was circulated to dealers, it may be in need of a software update before the box loses drive altogether.
 
Good God - that post was 6 months ago - Rip van Winkle stuff this.

My cousin bought a 2nd hand (the dealer called it 'pre-owned') Freelander 2 auto and didn't like the way it worked.

Following advice he disconnected the battery for a day, then on reconnecting it, he went over every single fuse and pulled it out waited 30 minutes then put them all back. All memories re-booted. Different car now.

Adaptive learning - very scary.

Thanks - I'll try brainwashing the adaptive learning first and then will investigate other avenues if this does still not work
