Apologies if this has already been asked / answered many times over, but after a search through the old posts I can't find the answer to what I thought was a simple question:confused:

My 02 Disco 2 (V8 / Auto) has a leaking transfer box (no surprises so far:p), it's either the input seal or the front output seal as well as leaking round the drain plug (lack of sealant / thread lock when last changed I think) and possibly from the bottom plate. I've seen a number of sites advertising transfer box seal / gasket kits, such as Gasket Set - Aftermarket at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

BUT, nobody says on their website if this will fit a Disco 2. I know that the "manual" says to use sealant rather than gaskets, but I'm mainly after getting all the seals in one go. My question therefore is " will the seals in the RTC3890 kit fit a Disco 2 transfer box ? ".

they will fit but your output flanges have different mudshields and unless you want to change mudsheilds use ftc4939 as output seals and icv100000 input seal ,but front output seal leak is easily recognised as wet around housing near flange ,the two sump bolts nearest sump plug can leak as only two that go straight through into box, intermediate shaft ,adjusting nut which shows behind hand brake is sealed by oring on front side of box housing and oring wear letting oil run down front of t/box often looking like input seal leak

Nice one James:D

Back underneath the Disco at the weekend to check the intermediate shaft as you suggest.

ok, been looking / reading about changing the intermediate shaft o rings as suggested above, and apologies if I'm being thick, but the instructions I've found suggest that once I've got the nut on the end undone I can just tap the shaft out????

Stupid question number two is, do I need to remove the transfer box from my Disco to do this???

yes or at least pulled away on 10mm studding, sump plate needs removing if pulling shaft completely out to support intermediate gear, orings frc7439 and frc8292 ,the one opposite end to nut apply good silicone bead on inner side of oring before fitting ,tis helps if casing hole worn a bit yours should have a spacer rather than collapseable spacer so just a matter of tightening nut but check gear still rocks by feeling gear by hand and that it has no endfloat

OK, just need to work out exactly where the leak is from then..... Guess an hour spent underneath with a scrubbing brush and some cleaner and then a good drive should short me out;)

best bet as not a little job ,is very common leak point, and isnt allways possible or necessary to stop all leaks, and yours may well be those bolts and flange etc

couldn't agree more. I'd rather spend two weeks asking questions and making sure I KNOW exactly what is wrong before I jump in and make things worse.... There's enough going wrong without me adding to it:rolleyes:
