Hope someone can help on this one..
Was driving my 89 Tdi Disco along the M2 yesterday at about 60 & without warning and instantly it felt like the wheel was pulled from my hand & pulled to the right. It only happened for a split second but that was enough to veer into the right lane. If I didnt have a good grip on the wheel me & the Mrs wouldn't be here now! Scared the ****e out of us. There was a brief loud metal on metal sound. I limped home at 30 and the brakes now feel grindy. Whopped front wheels off, pads & discs healthy and cant see anything wrong Please help!

Tried the 'wobble' to check for bearing play ...

Have a look at the steering linkage and ball joints ...

Spin the wheel while it's 'up' - see if you can isolate the 'grinding noise' to a wheel ...

If you drove home it's probably already wrecked the stub axle.

I know this as it happened to me. I was on the M11 going home and luckily the road was very quiet. Hard shoulder check of props and everything showed nothing and it drove, so carried on.

It cost me a stub axle and hub, around £200, as the bearings had welded themselves to them. :(

I keep spares of those bits now when I break up old discos.

had this on a series motor (not mine!)
outer bearing welded to stub.
resigned to the fact that the stub was knackered, took the bearing off just for ****s and giggles. finally had to gas axe it off.
(incidentally, the stub was re-useable after cleaning it, but we didnt due to the heating)

+2 on that diagnosis, I had a rear bearing weld its race onto the stub axle on the rear of my 'fender, went in an instant. Check all bearings and regrease, dont forget to check inner bearings aswell...

Been there and needed new underpants as well.

My stub axle had part of the bearing stuck fast and needed a grinder to take it off, the rest of the bearing had disintegrated.

I check them all regularly now.

Ordered bearings yesterday but I'll order stub now, if it isn't knackred then i'll fit it anyway & have a spare.. I'll check & grease the other 3 corners aswell. Many thanks guys..

Don't forget to order the bearing for the stub as well as a new seal.

And I don't know if its included but there is a brass ring goes round the stub.

Best google it and check you get all the parts you need.
