hi gents early 3.5 v8 with pre sd1 oil pump and real steel high vol kit fitted, previous engineer, now sacked and well know on here a few years back fitted the high press relief valve as well as the high vol kit . according to real steel the fitting of both is a no no as it puts too much strain on the dizzy drive gear. I do indeed have 45 psi plus at super hot idle and off the guage at road speed.

I am going to go back to the std valve as I can change it with the pump in the car. two questions:-

1. If i take the valve out do I have to prime the the pump with vasaline again?

2.any tips for getting the valve out? it was hard enough to grip when on the bench for the new engine let alone in the car sideways and upside down.

it should not..as long as not left for months..the pump will be wet still after all..

A good trick is to take out the oil pressure sender, and crank the engine over on the starter ( with ignition coil disconnected) until oil flows from the oil pressure sender hole.

The removal of the oil pressure sender makes it a lot easier for the pump to prime, and it will often prime on starter cranking only - and saves faffing about with removing the dizzy etc,.

disconnect king lead
grease gun full of vasaline and remove pressure relief valve plunger

squeeze Vaseline in and flick starter and repeat 8 times - then refit pressure relief valve and start.

pump will need priming if the pressure relief valve is touched on a 3.5 from experience

thanks guys, took it out today and put it in and it primed no problem which was good as quite a lot came out with it.

However having checked the std spring and new std valve again and the currently fitted one they were exactly the same, maybe 2mm in the spring but both of those were original ones to the engines.

put the other ones in and still the same, got about 40 psi at hot idle and off the guage (60 psi top) when driving when cold and near when hot.

anyone got the lengths of a std pre 76 valve and spring so I can check?

Worried about that poor old drive gear giving up on the way to pick up the bride lol

Thanks all
