Sorry if this has been done before and sorry if I've been asking lots of questions recently!
I have quite a rare thing...a 1986 110 with a good solid chassis that's never had a patch. OK so it lived in Cyprus until 2002 which might have helped...and it was originally RAF, and I've heard rumours about the MOD being a bit more fastidious with paint/underseal straight from the factory, although I don't know how true this is.
I want to rustproof it, but I don't want to spend stupid amounts of money on it. Ideally, one day in a few years time I'll roll it into the garage, take the body off and probably shot blast and repaint it, but if I can keep the tinworm at bay in the meantime that would be good. There's the usual scaley surface rust, it probably needs a bloody good pressure wash, a few days to dry and a few days with a wire cup brush, but it's very solid.
I've ruled out a "before'n'after" treatment based on the high cost and mixed reviews. A local agricultural engineers can waxoyl it for a mere fraction of the cost, although a local Landy specialist has said not to waxoyl it, I should paint it in used diesel engine oil as the sulphur in it kills the rust. And someone else has suggested painting it in Owatrol, a rust prevention chemical used on steel canal boats.
Right now, my favourite is waxoyl. I appreciate that I will need to do some prep work first, but then I can hand it over to someone else to do the messy part, and although I know Waxoyl may not be the best, surely it's better than nothing and a reasonable compromise.
Over to you...
