Hi I have a TD5 which is immaculate except for slight rusting starting to appear on the black door tops just above the window rubbers.

I have dabbed on some black touch up paint but would like to do a proper job. Is this a common problem? How easy are the window rubbers to get off? Do you reckon the paint is a gloss or matt?

My TD5 has this as well. It looks to me like a plastic coating over the frame. You can get replacement frames but they are pricey. About £180 IIRC from Rimmers for the set.

I better bet would be some 2nd hand ones.

I've covered the rusted bits on mine with black insualting tape which is just about ok.

Cheers, Andy

Sunday afternoon, the sun was shining. I thought Fook it I'll have a go at tarting up the paintwork me self.

The good news is that the window rubbers come off dead easy. They just lift up and off. A little rubber flap at each end curls round to the inside of the door and tucks under a metal clip just underneath the door trim. this is easy to remove & put back.

Got some Car plan Satin Black spray - £4.50 which is a perfect match, sanded the rust down, covered everything else in masking tape and newspaper and put about 5 coats on.

Looks great - I don't know what I was worrying about.

Took me about an hour all told to do the drivers side front and back doors. The other side isn't showing any signs of rust yet - i don't know whether its due to how its parked on the drive with one side more exposed to the elements than the other.

Anyway, Its a peice of cake and the car now looks tip top again.

Cheers

Nice tip, thanks - mine are just beginingto show signs of flaky paint so I might just have a go before they get too bad

Nice one, my offside rear door's got it and it does my t**s in. Good to know it's an easy fix cos looks bloody awful when the rest of the car is bob on
