Now my next few days off are booked in with changing the brakes and renewing the caliper seals i think it would be a good time to start tackling the under body rust. Nothing major just surface rust but want to get it sorted before waxoiling the whole car. I plan to wire brush then coat with something. I was thinking of hammerite straight to rust (black) or use their converter (dark brown). obviously the converter would need to be over painted, but which would be the best option?

I think waxoyl on bare metal works fine doesn't it? I think a layer of something else underneath just holds water and keeps the waxoyl off.

Just spray the Waxoil on. Just done my Transit which is full of top quality British made rust and only 7 years old, it's even rusted right through in places.

Was the '04 still using the steel brake pipes?
If so, it might be a good time to look at changing them before the rot gets to them.

Ditto that - just brush (not wire just semi-stiff bristles) any loose rust & road dirt off & spray waxoyl onto the dry metal. Don't let naked flame near it for a few days 'cause of the white spirit content, which will evaporate in time.
