Running on veggie oil?!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this and trying to get some base info. I'm interested in running a Landy on veggie oil. It's not got to be anything flash just a cheap way of getting my Daughter, son and me to the river with our canoe.
I'm thinking of an early series diesel, hense the interest in running on veggie oil. Can anyone give me hte details of whats involved and what additional kit I might need?
 
Depends on how hi tec you want to go. You can mix it up in ya main tank. say 60% diesel 40% veg oil in summer, less % of veg in winter (cos its colder). Pay some money and you can have a 2 tank system, heat exchanger, valves and light up switches, lots of lovely things like that.

Think I've got it worked out, just waiting for some more fuel hose to arrive and a bit of re-plumming and I'll be there.

Not sure if this lot think it will work. No one's come back to tell me not too...

You need to find out if your vehicle has a Bosch fuel pump. If it has, you can run vegetable oil. You may find that rubber fuel lines perish faster running on vegetable oil. There are databases online, of vehicles compatible with vegetable oil, and there are many specialist websites and forums dealing with this (if we're allowed to post links i will)

The most successful way to run vegetable oil is with a twin tank system. You have a small tank (22l or so) for diesel, and put clean vegetable oil (SVO) into your main tank.

SVO is thicker than diesel, so it needs to be heated to be at its best. You can purchase heated fuel filters used from fleabay, or new from specialist sites. You may find additional heating is required. There is a coil you can wrap around the injector pipes which provides further heat. This is usually enough for most engines that are compatible.

You start on plain diesel, do your journey, then park up. You must then switch back to conventional diesel (usually for about 2min) to purge any SVO from the fuel system. most engines don't like starting on SVO.

Some unburnt SVO can get into the engine oil. This necessitates regular changes of oil and oil filter (5-6k) Or you can buy special oil which resists polymerisation, which is better for your engine.

Typical good twin tank conversions will set you back about £500, HMC&E say you can use 2500 litres of SVO per year before you have to pay duty on it. Said conversion would pay for itself rapidly.
 
twin tank is the way to go, my 2.8 daihatsu series IIa will NOT start on pure vegi, but runs great on it.

Valve, 28 quid, 2nd hand heated fuel filter, some pipe and a lot of work, prob spent 60 quid.

FREE VO from the pub, 52p a litre from the shops, 32p a litre filtered WVO (large quantity) delivery.

And it smells better

I got the valve from the US, i will try see what the dealer was called but just ordered it over the internet, wondered if i would ever see the valve or my money again but it arrived fine. Its a while ago now but the SII is still running well and still on vegi, valve has lasted well and the only problem i have had is that small amounts of white gooooo have made it past my filtering process and clogged the fuel filter so it began to cut out on idle a bit even tho filter it is heated. (ex pegot pickup filter) So washed it off and it was fine again although i know have very sticky shoes.

And still i would say twin tank is the only way to go especially now our winters seem to mean i will have to start wearing socks as starting on pure vegi is still impossible for me even with new heater plugs.

saying putting some white spirit into the mix helps with stopping it gelling, and burn better at low temps.
I'm looking forward to trying it soon !

you're dragging up an old thread here ain't ya'?

If you're wanting to run on veg do a search an you'll find loads of threads worth reading or go to the link on the previous page but my advice is not to put anything in your fuel tank like white spirit etc that hasn't had fuel duty paid on it other than veg oil or you're running the risk of serious fines / impoundement.

was only saying what I saw, wasn't saying it would be a given to work.
and that was for running 100% veg oil which isn't what I plan on doing, and yeh I have looked at loads of the threads on here about twin tank systems etc, was only putting this up cause I thought it could help someone

white spirit does work to thin oil if you want to do that, so would paint thinners, meths and lots of other stuff. I personally use unleaded petrol as it's duty paid so no probs if you get dipped.

and you don't need a twin tank system either.
 
I run on 100% veg BUT i start it and shut down at night on diesel, it does not like starting on Veg especially a cold morning so i have 2 tanks and an electric swap valve.

(SII with Daihatsu 2.8 n/a)
 
Oh and please note, it is picky but if you mix veg with a thining product with no duty paid such as white spirit or heating oil it is illigal, mixing with petrol is ok cos its duty paid, veg is duty free up to 2500 ltrs a year.

What do we have on here, A bunch of Landyzone Lawyers? The peep just want to save some money on over priced fuel, and white spirit and heating oil is taxed WITH VAT.

This is such a dead horse issue of what is legal and not. If you think you might get caught then don't do it.. But I don't think driving your personnel fender you will have a problem. You probably stand a better chance of getting struck be lighting first
