Im doing my first trial tomorrow in my disco. I've done pay and play site and been laning a fare amount,dare say I've picked up.some bad habits. Has anyone got any advice on driving style/techneque or any tips that can help me.
 
To start off with 2nd gear low range difflock as soon as you hit the entrance Do not take difflock off until you leave.

(Sometimes the nasty bstds make tight turns when its possible to unlock your diff halfway around and back in again to get a tighter turning circle) As its your fitst trial do not do this doing it wrong could easily damage your transferbox.)

So to recap:

Difflock always, 2nd gear low for most things,

Take a passenger and make sure they sign on and walk the course with you.

Wind your lock stops in as far as possible to get asmuch lock without locking your wheels against the radius arms,

Close your mirrors!

Most of all Enjoy it you may make some silly mistakes we all have at some point and laugh it off.

When going down steep decents keep in a low gear do not dip the clutch!

Did I say enjoy it.

You will learn lots from seasoned trialers they will laugh at bling mods that give no advantage but explain a good trialling setup.

The old farts are usually pretty good!!!

Thank you. Its dorset land rover club. I went last month to join and have a watch. Thought I'd post on hear to try and get as much info as I could. A little know how can go along way.
 
you know the scoring system, right? I assume someones told you.

few tips on tough gates (though this my vary between clubs so ask):

you don't have to get you whole vehicle through, just a Hub, this should save you from putting you vehicle through hell on the hard parts (usually the 1 gate on top of a F*@k off steep climb!)

Just like a roller coaster, keep you limbs inside the vehicle at all times, keep putting and arm out at and you'll get DSQ'd.

Make sure your doors a fully closed and stay closed.

Mashalls decision is final, don't argue with him, cos he'll just give you 12!

Be Prepared for repairs, but if you break something and need spares, your club point you towards someone with a spare (Been through 4 diffs on CCV I trailed with me mate, 2 in one section!)

Take a plaggy bag for your score card.

make sure you got a sutiable tow rope (not a winch). You may be called upon to pull someone out.

Overall have fun, maintain banter, and even if you do ****, you can always have a bimble round the site.
 
Ow if you get cross axles and spin up opposite wheels don't keep spinnIng you will blow up diffs!!

Accept your stuck!

If you really get into it say a few years down the line look out for 4 pin diffs

I'll be fitting a Modified p38 4 pin centre to the front on my 80 inch CCv motor eventually pegged and with an ashcroft 4.75:1 cwp and hopefully a set of shortened 300m front shafts and early defender 110 90'cvs to a series axle case. Rear is std series III Salisbury.

If you get into it seriously I'll see you at the nationals next year!!

Landyzone has few actual comp people tbh which is surprising.

P.s don't take a strop with you, you will be laughed at get a 24mm rope either from the club or online! Dispite what others say on forums!

I would love to promote trialling events throughout the UK especially the aro events.

Lots of people fail on keeping their vehicle up to scratch for scruteneering let alone ready to trial.

You will love it!!

Anything you do not feel comfortable doing just stop and
Take penalty.

Cracking day.came last but didnt expect anything different. Learnt alot and realised how much more there is to learn. Only 8 sections today as someones v8 rangie kept breaking on corse and the driver desided to fix it instead of getting a tow which ate into everyones time. Main thing I realised is how bad my tires are on wet long grass and sticky mud. They've been ace in the dry up to today. By the sounds of it most people have got 2 sets ot tyres. I would recomend trialing to anyone with a landy:)
 
Also I've been given a to do list by the scrutaneer.1 involves putting another return spring on the throttle.sounds and looks simple to do.But im having trouble searching for a spring.can it be any old spring or does it have to be something proper.

I think anything thats got what you think is a decent amount of return should do.

To your tyre problem, I'd get some proper knobblies, I use Insa-turbo special tracks, they are second hand, but they DEFINATELY dig in when you want them too! Plus Insa's range are remoulds, so even better on teh old wallet if you want em new.....or if money no object go for something a bit more expensive.
 
What tyres are you running at the moment??

Personally I like Diamonds Insa's are good if you can get them 33 inch measured and narrow. I like the diamonds as they come up top with size and really skinny.
 
loud! road noise give you an ego boost cos you sound like a tank rolling down the road, but wears after a while! Not much contact on the road compared to raod tyres, so I'm a bit weary in the wet.

I've heard all sorts as well. I don't drive around with them fitted, I lug em to events, But I was told it was better to drive tot he event with them on.

I rather I didn't cos moneys Tight and I ain't forking out for a set if whatever treads left on these gets sacrificed to the tarmac!
 
I dont need no ego boost with loud tyres!!!

End of the day if you do good the trophy is enough and if not its a must try harder!!!
 
Good tyres General rule,

Firestone SAT's V good but not too tall but usually cheap,

SAG's Not as open and again not too tall but again usually cheap.

Insa's ok most people use them very open tread pattern not too cheap too wide for my personal use others love the wider tyres personal choice,

Diamonds Good all rounder tall and skinny can get them 33 inch but may prove harder to fit to discos

Bronco grizzly claw NLA very poor castings but very good offroad tyre

Plenty more other makes available I like my cheap tyres I run SAT's with offset Austin champ front rims for more steering lock they have the max 104mm offset as LR clubs allow.

Vid here by Ryder and his son Kai of me driving very poorly after changing tyres and rear shocks at the event. See the tyres are not very tall (fit disco ok tho)

Im running continental ats.235/85/16 they came off a brand new 90 and were going cheap. Thanks for all the help.its all sinking in.
 
to do trials does your vehicle have to be pretty standard??? (and by trials i mean the next level up from tyro's nothing more serious)

dont see any winch bumpers for instance?
 
There is no need it's jut added weight and weight is a bad thing trailing

There is a lot of bull about a std well sorted 90 or 88 hybrid will be able to drive most sections down to driver skill

The trials I do and Dorset club is an aro club so must be very std to keep all things fair

Most winch bumpers stick forward or are not the same profile to keep within regs

Some clubs are more relaxed than others
I was asked to put a tailgate on my 90 as thE body can flex more giving an advantage bare In mind tho the club in question has lots of top drivers in the country winners of the ationals in various classes over the last few years.

The way figure is if I can hold my own against these boys once the trials motor is done then I will get to way more events and play with the best and have some chance nationally

Thanks. So it sounds like scrutiniser discretion then, it's just that I might fancy doin one in my 90 but it has a winch bumper etc. couldnt be arsed to take it off just for a go at one of these events.
