Perhaps i could pose a future addition tomy derfender 90 county hardtop.
A friend of mine has added an exteranl roll cage to his 110,for reasons of safety and the ability to act as a roof rack as well.
i have toyed with this idea, but have had advise that it will give a higher weight and possible alter the behaviuor of my truck.
So i hav looked at a decent roof rack. The costs are very similar with no real safety to the roof structure.
So what are peoples thoughts ,which way would you go.
My truck is s minter sio i will be keeping it for several years,so while i am not using it for anything off road or camping etc at the moment i probably will in the future

Frankly if, "so while i am not using it for anything off road or camping etc at the moment i probably will in the future" why bother with either till you do decide to go off-road/camping? Either are extra weight high up, just where you don't really want it.

For me, green-laning and off-roading are becoming more important and more extreme so I'd go roll-cage. I don't plan big overland trips and see a roofrack as a means to burn more money in fuel .. though as you're pushing a brick through the air anyway I have no clue how much extra it'd be!

I see no reason to be unduly concerned about the roof safety any more than any other road vehicle, and I certainly wouldn't give it much thought, especially if I weren't planning to go off-road .. ;)

A roofrack might be beneficial if you're always, or regularly, fully loaded and still want or need more space, if not I'd keep away from them.
