Hiya,

I've finally gotten around to doing my camshaft, and currently putting new rocker assemblies together, but I'm struggling to get the 'bolt towers' (dunno what they're properly called!) off the old shaft, and nearly impossible to get onto the new shaft.

Are they supposed to be that tight?

Any tips on getting them off and back on again?

Island don't seem to list these parts separately (that I can find in the engine section) otherwise I'd get new (going up there tomorrow for some other bits anyway)

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers
Marc

normally they are tight because of carbon build up from the oil that has been circulating around over the years. you could try soaking them in brake cleaner or similar. Carbon Tetrachloride is best (and lethal). Not sure if you can get it any more.

Just had another look at the one I've managed to get off (with some gentle persuasion with a knocking stick!) and it looks pretty clean inside, no obvious carbon build up. I will try spraying some brake cleaner on the others though.

I was kinda expecting them to slide almost as easily as the rockers, with the bolts being what held them in place

The build up will be external as badly drawn attachment.....

Correct term is rocker shaft pedestals. They need to be a snug fit. To get them off or on new shaft warm them slightly. Make sure they are built correctly or you will have reduced oil flow. Look at RAVE for instructions.

Cheers guys.

I've been attached to rave over the last couple of days, first time I've used it for step by step on a major job. brilliant (once you find the bits you need!!!).

From what I can work out, the oilholes in the shaft are at about 8 o'clock as you look from the front of the engine (on the right hand bank). That's where the old ones are at least, so I'm copying that. Rave isn't clear on this. It does mention a shaft identification groove at 1 o'clock, but the shafts I'm putting in don't have this (****part, couldn't get anything else :( ).

Just finished doing the heater o-rings, which went well using Stufer's guide, so now back to the rockers. Will try the brake cleaner and some heat (not together!).

Cheers

Marc

Cheers all, Worked a treat. Bit of carb cleaner, some cam lube (had been using clean engine oil before) and a smidge of heat for a couple of them.

Was starting to worry about that :D
