Repair or buy a galv chassis

When the MOD landrovers get painted they get dipped in black gunge, then they get turned and dipped again, then turned and dipped again. The civi ones get a coat and thats it...

LR know they COULD make them last longer, but as said above they don't want them to last to long, however the MOD told them they wanted them to last a bit better, hence the full inside and out coating in goo.

why the feck didnt/dont LR galv chassis' in the first place?

Basically because they don't five a **** as long as the cars get out of warranty.

Remember, in GB-Land, customers are scumbags who exist to pay high money for low value, and "service" is not on offer.

Read to post six an **** be arsed with the rest. Any how if you like ****in about with yer spanners an hate welding. If yer don't wanna be ****tin yerself when you see the MOT man hittng yer chassis with his pointy thing. If yer dont wanna spend a weekend welding before yer MOT. If yer wanna keep the vehicle for the forseeable future. If yer wanna be sure that every thing on the vehicle is as good as it can be. If you've got three weeks solid an just about every weekend between June and November, you can have a couple of weekends off to fix the washing machine an to have a hangover. If you can cope with Haddocks sending the wrong parts two weeks late. If you want the satisfaction that only comes with a shiny new chassis. Then go for it. The hardest part is putting the friggin doors back on. An if yer over 50 then I'd go fer an ungalvanized one an a couple of buckets of underseal.

Thing is asking how much is like asking how long is a bit of poo, cos it all depends on what you discover while it's all in bits an to what extent you have everything else prepared before it all goes back together.

strathearn engineering quote 2500 for a new galv fitted with new brake pipes, bushes and exhaust BUT

as Grunt suggests - when the chassis is gone, you've got to replace pretty much every nut, bolt, washer, seal, pipe, and hose and if as on mine, a good bulk of the body panels - like rear tub, wings, bulkhead - and while you're doing it theres other bits you'd be daft not to replace for long life. I'm at about 5 grand so far and still have a radiator, power steering box and few other bits to buy.

So either the quote is low to get business, or they do feck all with all the other bits that need replacing and you end up with a turd on a shiney chassis.

If you can weld, I'd go for the repairs for the moment, it won't take to long, not to expensive and then have a think about selling it. I am in the middle of doing almost the same repairs on my 90. As someone else said, give the rest of the chassis a good going over before you start to make sure it's worth doing. Did a new chassis for a relative a couple of years ago, took me ages to finish and the cost of the chassis is normally only the start of the expense, I think we ended up spending a grand on the chassis and another grand on bits discovered to be shot. I took a day to do the two outriggers and a day to do the rear crossmember. Get in touch if you want some help.

new chassis. if a jobs worth doing its worth doning well. dodgy welding a landrover chassis is certainly going to devalue the vehicle. its about the only solid part on a land rover and if its rusty and falling appart then you dont really have much choice.

is everything else made of jelly then ?

would that explain depreciation? afterall when LR, or any one else makes chassis they generally weld them. or perhaps you think the magic them together?

I agree that a new chassis is better than repairing an old one but welding a chassis does'nt mean dodgy welding every time, like I said earlier, I just done my own and it's turned out a good job, the rest of the chassis is good so it's a big jump from £200 to repair to anything from £2000 upwards for a chassis.
My trade is fabricator/welder so it's a big help but most people who mess around with landys can do a good job with the right gear and a bit of time but like I say, if we had unlimited budgets a new galvy chassis would be first choice.

Hi all

I think i will go down the road of repairing what i have got. My welding skills are good (apart from up side down).

If any one has any good ideas with replacing the front out riggers and the rear cross member then please let me know

Cheers all

James

tip it on it's side.

oh i see we are all funny Fu****s on this site. lets set the scene you go to look at a possible landy for £xxxx you have a good look round all looks good untill you see the spatter marks and burn marks from dodgy daves welding effort on the chassis!

you see another vehicle with a nice shiney galvinsed job for just that wee bit extra, Which one are you goning to buy?

of course it devalues your vehicle u dafties.

now i dont know the abbilites of however is goning to attempt the welding so i wont comment but you must have some real hours under your belt with the arc /mig to make a good job that carnt be noticed by a novice.

So where are you going to find two similar vehicles but one with a galvanised chassis and one with an original chassis that's been welded that are only slightly different in price.

what about the other one thats half the price and has bin professionally welded by the chief LR welder. and then bin certified by the worlds leading eggspurt on welded repairs?

yer an arse
