Can the two recovery eyes underneath at the rear of my defender be used for pulling the vehicle if it gets stuck or should they be swapped for jate rings? Someone told me the two original eyes at the back were only designed for security in transit, if they need changing how do I attach the new recovery points, Thanks.

dendends what your towing but jate ring would only fasten in the same way ,i would ,have used them to tow vehicles across a yard ,or a smaller car on road ,but on road towing is better done from central point towbar or between the two points,as long as chassis is in good nick

Thanks guys I want two secure points at the back of the vehicle for recovery, pulling friends out of the mud mainly, I intended to use the points that are already there but was advised that jate rings are safer and better suited to the purpose, my only other option was to look at some sort of recovery eyes to fit to the rear cross member.

Dont use the factory rings as they are as you say for transport purposes only, a jate ring will use the same fixing bolt but will be pulling squarely and fixed both sides of the chassis rail.
If you fix anything to your xmember it needs to be in tip top shape.
