Just noticed this leak coming from my nearside rear wheel. It's not coming out of the brake pipe or bleed nipple but appears to come out of the rear of the wheel.

Any ideas what the problem/ solution could be ?

Cheers.

How much space do I need to be able to remove halfshaft if needed beside the vehicle ?

Reason I ask is it will be parked on the drive next to the house and I won't be able to move it when I start so need to make sure I have enough room.

Cheers

Approx the same distance as from diff to hub.......suprisingly ;)

Cheers, I knew that was going to be the answer lol.

Haynes manual says that the drive member & halfshaft come out as 1 assembly.

RAVE manual seems to contradict this.

Do I need to remove the halfshaft to replace the oil seal ?

Cheers

yes it needs removing ,drive member and halfshaft can come out as one , if hub has an outer seal it will need changing too

Had the same problem a few weeks back. Mechanic sorted it (now it's leaking again though). Here's the itemised list on the invoice, in case you're wondering about parts:

Gasket axle
Hock washer
Seal hub axle

His handwriting is hard to read, so some of that might be wrong.

unless early defender, inner hub seal isnt an oil seal, its a grease seal ,either outer seal stops oil or seal in stub axle ,checking breather is a must in any case

It's a 1986 90 James with rear drums.

I replaced the axle breather a couple of weeks ago so wouldn't think that's the problem.

I will check the other bits cheers
