Hi all, over from the RR forum for some advice.
My mate has bought a 2000 Freelander which we collected yesterday and it drives quite nicely.
We have discovered that the rear tailgate does not unlock and open either with the central locking or using the key, nothing appears to happen, no clicks, whirs, or clonks. The rear window goes up and down using the dash switch ok but does not drop when the external door handle is operated.
I have done a search but not turned up the same symptoms, so advise on how to manually open the tailgate and some pointers to what to check would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.....TC.

You should be able to use the self test to open the tailgate. (if it's not broken though)

Self test mode - From the rave disk:

The CCU can be put into self test mode to enable the inputs and outputs from the CCU to be tested for correct functionality without the need for TestBook. To put the CCU into self test mode the ignition should be off with the vehicle unlocked and unarmed and the following sequence must be followed:

1. Turn the ignition 'on'
2. Press and hold the rear fog switch 'on'
3. Turn the ignition 'off'
4. Turn the ignition 'on'
5. Release rear fog switch within four seconds of ignition 'on'

[When turning mine on, I turned the key to the second click, when the electric powers up]

On successful entry to the self test mode the sounder will sound for 0.8 seconds and the courtesy lamps will illuminate for 0.8 seconds.

When testing an input, for example a door open switch, on successful receipt of the input the CCU will sound the sounder for 0.8 seconds and illuminate the courtesy lamps for 0.8 seconds.

Outputs are tested in sequence using the CDL lock switch to progress through the outputs. A CDL unlock requests repeats the last test. Outputs are either operated continuously until the CDL lock switch is released, or operated in a pulsed fashion until the next operation of the CDL lock switch. Output formats are described in the table 'Self test outputs'.

Output --------------------------Test type

Rear fog lamps -----------------Continuous
Lock ------------------------------Pulsed
Superlock ------------------------Pulsed
Unlock ----------------------------Pulsed
Front wiper ---------------------Continuous
Alarm LED -----------------------Continuous
Volumetrics ---------------------Continuous
Horn -----------------------------Pulsed
BBUS -----------------------------Pulsed
Heated rear window ----------Pulsed
Tail window down -------------Pulsed
Tail door actuator -------------Pulsed
Tail window up-----------------Pulsed
Rear wiper ---------------------Continuous
Hazard lights -------------------Continuous
Door open warning lamp ----Continuous
Seatbelt warning lamp -------Continuous
Handbrake warning lamp ---Continuous

Thanks for the replies and advise.
I seem to have sorted it but not sure why!!
I lowered the rear window via the dash switch, then tried the tailgate and it opened, closed the tailgate and the window went up as it should.
Since doing this it has worked ok. I assume it has reset itself so will keep trying it for a few days.
Thanks again fella's :)
